Upcoming Book Club Picks for 2022-2023
When I first joined my book club back in September 2011, the group was meeting after a three-month hiatus. They didn’t meet during the summer because it was too hectic with family vacations (that changed in 2013, though). Because we didn’t meet in the summer, we don’t pick our new list of books at the end of the year.
Every February or March, each person submits books they want to read. We then vote on the selections and the 12 books with the most votes win. Our reading schedule is from June to May of each year. (We still have two books left from our current schedule.)
Here are the books we picked for this upcoming reading year:
- The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
- A memoir of our choice
- Lines of Courage by Jennifer A. Nielsen
- The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth
- Feed by Mira Grant
- The Maid by Nita Prose
- In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren
- My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Frederik Backman
- The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarty
- The Silence of Bones by June Hur
- The Girls I’ve Been by Tess Sharpe
- The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave
I’m very happy with this list. I’m excited to read all of these books except THE MAID, but I think that’s because I don’t really know very much about it. I’m also excited to choose a memoir to read in July. I just have to figure out which one I want to read. Right now I’m leaning toward Stanley Tucci’s TASTE: MY LIFE THROUGH FOOD, but I’m not sure. Do you have any suggestions?
This year, we started our selection process in February and we had all our books voted for by our March meeting. I’m only just posting the list today because every year I make bookmarks for everyone so we can keep track of what we’re reading each month. Since I unveiled the bookmarks via text yesterday, I can share them online now too. I’m really happy with how they turned out.
Have you read any of the books on our list? Which ones do you recommend?
Very cute bookmarks!
I’ve read four of your list. ‘The Midnight Library’ was one of my favorites last year. I also enjoyed ‘The Good Sister,’ ‘The Last Thing He Told Me,’ and ‘In a Holidaze.’
Everything else on your list is on my to-read list except ‘The Silence of Bones.’ I’ll have to check that one out.
Some memoirs I’ve read in the past year or so that I’ve enjoyed:
Michael J. Fox’s ‘No Time Like the Future’
Alex Trebek’s ‘The Answer Is …’
‘Dancing at the Pity Party’ by Tyler Feder
Matthew McConaughey’s ‘Greenlights’
Julianna Margulies’ ‘Sunshine Girl’ ‘Crying at H Mart,’ by Michelle Zauner
‘The Light of the World’ by Elizabeth Alexander
Happy reading!
Thanks for the suggestions, Alison! I’ll check those out. 🙂
I LOVED The Midnight Library! I didn’t really enjoy The Maid. I gave it 3 stars which means it was okay. I LOVED My Grandmother Asked…!! It was my first Backman novel and it was just so good. I’ve only read Big Little Lies from Lianne Moriarty. I’m actually reading The Last Thing He Told Me right now! I’m 1/3 through, it’s keeping my attention so far. Some really great memoirs I’ve read (well listened. I only listen to memoirs) are Taste (Stanley Tucci so good choice!), Bossypants (Tina Fey), Yes Please (Amy Poehler), both of Mindy Kaling’s books, Shrill (Lindy West), Little Princes (Conor Grennan), This Is Just My Face (Gabourey Sidibe), Becoming (Michelle Obama), I Am Malala (Malala Yousafzai), Canada (Mike Myers), Me (Elton John), Inside Out (Demi Moore), The Elephant Whisperer (Lawrence Anthony), I could go on. lol.
Thank you so much for you all your suggestions! 😀 I’ll definitely look into these. I’ve been really interested in Michelle Obama’s and Malala Yousafzai’s memoirs. Julie Andrews and Anthony Daniels are two others I’m considering. I’m also curious about Ewan McGregor’s novelization of Long Way Round. It seems like I have quite a lot of great memoirs to choose from.
I have also listened to I Am C-3PO which I really enjoyed (4 stars) and Julie Andrews’ first memoir Home, about her early career, which was okay. I’m not a die-hard Julie Andrews fan so I was actually bored a bit. Home Work is about the second half of her career. I may not listen to that one BUT I would be more familiar with her later work.
I didn’t realize until just now that Julie Andrews had two of them. I noticed on Goodreads that her second memoir has a better overall rating than the first one. It would be fun to read something about Audrey Hepburn, but there aren’t any memoirs, only biographies written by other people. Oh well.
I really liked ‘Becoming’ and ‘I am Malala’ as well.
I’ve heard great things about both of them.
