My Thoughts

THE WIDOWMAKER is a very dark thriller that kept me guessing until the end. It’s very thought-provoking and deals with hard subjects like child abandonment, abuse, and sexual assault. I thought the story was captivating and suspenseful. I love Morrissey’s beautifully descriptive prose. I also enjoyed that the story’s told in a dual POV. It took me a few chapters to understand what was happening. When I wasn’t listening to the audiobook, I was thinking about the characters and their lives.

I liked both of the main characters. I also liked the narrators for the audiobook. They both did a great job bringing Morgan and Investigator Hudson to life. I thought some of the secondary characters were a bit flat and could’ve been fleshed out more. I liked the little Easter eggs pointing to HELLO, TRANSCRIBER when Hudson was interacting with and talking about Sgt. Kole.

My Thoughts

HELLO, TRANSCRIBER was a captivating romantic thriller. Thanks to Morrissey’s beautifully descriptive prose, I zipped right through it as it hooked me right from the beginning and has left me thinking about the characters and their relationships. It’s more than a thriller with romantic fluff. It’s also a thought-provoking story that deals with hard subjects like spousal abuse, depression and suicidal ideation, homo- and transphobia, and drug use in minors.

I could see the big twist at the end. Knowing about the twist didn’t ruin the suspense or story for me, though, because I still wanted to know how everything would play out. I’m disappointed that Hazel and Nik didn’t stay together in the end. I feel like it could’ve worked out without damaging the overall feeling of the story.

My Thoughts

I thought the concept of THE CHRISTMAS MURDER GAME sounded fun and suspenseful. While I was never bored, I just didn’t think the execution was done very well and the writing was awkward. I feel like Benedict tried way too hard. The “sonnets” were very clunky and the anagrams were weird. Fortunately, listening to the audiobook helped hide the weird spellings. I also thought the use of “obvs” and “pud” (pudding) in the narrative, not dialogue, was really strange.

As far as the story goes, I knew who the main antagonist was pretty early on. It was fairly obvious, or obvs *rolls eyes*. I didn’t mind Lily but I thought some of her choices were a little suspect. Every other character was either annoying, selfish, or not developed very well. The circumstances that had to happen so the story could take place weren’t very realistic either.

This is a nit-picky thing that took me out of the story. It could be because I’m from the US and speak American English. Anyway, one of the characters is pregnant and this character and their cousins said that the cousins would be the baby’s aunt or uncle. Aunts and uncles are parents’ siblings not cousins. They’d be a cousin too–first cousin once removed, actually.

My Thoughts

The premise of THE IT GIRL really drew me in. I love dark academia and psychological thrillers. I loved reading why everything happened the way they did and what lead up to the main “thing.” I really enjoyed the split narrative: 10 years in the past when the “thing” happened and the present when some of the circumstances of the “thing” are questioned. The ending was really good. I wasn’t disappointed in learning how it all came together. I’ll definitely give Ware another go.

My Thoughts

For the most part, I loved THE GOOD SISTER. It was a fantastic story that kept me reading until the end. I saw the big twist coming a mile away, but it didn’t ruin the suspense or story for me. I still wanted to know how everything would play out, and I wasn’t disappointed. I really liked the characters. I liked that even though I guessed the twist, I still kept wondering if I was right.

I really struggled with Hepworth’s portrayal of mental illness, specifically Borderline Personality Disorder. I feel like her antagonist perpetuated the stigma that people with BPD are violent psychopaths. I simply wish she had talked to a DBT-trained psychologist or even someone who’s diagnosed with BPD before she used it as one of the reasons why the antagonist did what they did.
