My Thoughts

I’ve been waiting to read HELL BENT since it came out in 2023; I just never got around to it until now. I’m so glad I finally read it because it was quite the ride! As gritty as NINTH HOUSE (maybe more), HELL BENT had me on the edge of my seat from the very first page. I love the paranormal aspect of the secret societies of Yale and all the historical elements of these books. I also loved delving deeper into the uncanny and learning more of its secrets. I’ll be on pins and needles waiting for the third book and excited to see where the next installment takes its readers.

My Thoughts

I liked the premise of THE PASSENGERS and I thought the story was very compelling. It definitely kept me reading to the end despite the fact that I hated most of the characters and found parts of the story hard to get through because of the content. *coughSofiacough* I think THE PASSENGERS is plausible except for Clare’s ability to clothe and move her large, dead husband from their bed to the trunk of their car while she was 7 months pregnant. I also think the story portrays an interesting view of Cancel Culture, social media, online anonymity, mob mentality, bipartisan politics, and the future of A.I.

My Thoughts

WHEN I’M DEAD is a very dark thriller that kept me guessing until the end. It’s thought-provoking and deals with subjects like bullying, suicide, and parent / child relationships. I thought the story was captivating, emotional, and suspenseful. I love Morrissey’s prose. It’s so descriptive and beautiful. (Although, if I heard “shadow of a doubt” one more time, I might have screamed.) I really liked that the story’s told from multiple POVs. I loved the different look into what was going on and I thought each POV was unique and made the story better.

I really liked the characters, especially Rowan and Axel. Their anxiety and fear was so palpable. Reading from each of their POVs was thrilling because of need to find their daughter, Chloe, and their self-doubt in wondering whether they were good parents and really knew their daughter. There was so much more emotion in this story than the previous two books, which kept me reading and thinking about the story when I wasn’t.

My Thoughts

I was really excited to read THE UNWEDDING because I know Ally Condie personally. When I found out Ally was writing a murder mystery, I was hoping the story would be more of a thriller. To my disappointment, it wasn’t. While the story’s suspenseful at times, I never had that edge-of-my-seat feeling I crave when reading thrillers.

Despite my disappointment with the mystery, I still found Ally’s writing a joy to read. As always, her writing has a poetic and lyrical feel and paints a clear picture of love, loss, and healing. The emotionality was my favorite part of this story. I especially loved reading the aspects of the story that were inspired in part by her life.

My Thoughts

THE WIDOWMAKER is a very dark thriller that kept me guessing until the end. It’s very thought-provoking and deals with hard subjects like child abandonment, abuse, and sexual assault. I thought the story was captivating and suspenseful. I love Morrissey’s beautifully descriptive prose. I also enjoyed that the story’s told in a dual POV. It took me a few chapters to understand what was happening. When I wasn’t listening to the audiobook, I was thinking about the characters and their lives.

I liked both of the main characters. I also liked the narrators for the audiobook. They both did a great job bringing Morgan and Investigator Hudson to life. I thought some of the secondary characters were a bit flat and could’ve been fleshed out more. I liked the little Easter eggs pointing to HELLO, TRANSCRIBER when Hudson was interacting with and talking about Sgt. Kole.
