My Thoughts

Just like with THE GOOSE GIRL and ENNA BURNING, it took me a couple of chapters to get into RIVER SECRETS. Once I got into the story, I thought it was very entertaining. I really enjoyed exploring the water-speaking language in the story and seeing more of the wind- and fire-speaking languages explored in the previous two. It was interesting to see how all three of them worked together.

I loved that the story was from Razo’s POV and I was glad Enna was still a major part of the story. I loved him in the previous two books and loved getting to know him better in this one. Not only was seeing things through his perspective enlightening but it was also very entertaining.

I’m looking forward to reading FOREST BORN, especially since the MC is basically brand new to the series. I’m also looking forward to see how the earth-speaking language (if that’s what it’s even called) will come into play since Hale introduces a new speaking ability in each book.

My Thoughts

I absolutely loved SHIVER. The story was sweet and sensual, exciting and heart-breaking, and happy and sad. Even though it seemed kind of slow at first, I was hooked from the beginning because of the characters. Grace and Sam made the story seem so real. I loved the innocence of the sensuality of their relationship.  I also loved the awkwardness of experiencing first love through them.

My favorite thing about the book was that it was told from both Grace’s and Sam’s POV. Getting to experience the world from both the human and wolf perspective was so enlightening and added so much to the story.

Stiefvater did a great job of forming the story and pulling me through it. I look forward to reading the sequel when it comes out next year.

My Thoughts

It took me a couple of chapters to get into ENNA BURNING, but it also took me a couple of chapters to get into THE GOOSE GIRL. Once I got into the story, I thought it was very intriguing. I loved exploring the fire-speaking language of the story and seeing more of the wind-speaking language explored in the first book. It was interesting to see how both of the languages worked together.

I loved getting to know Enna better since I only knew her a little bit through Isi in the first story. I also enjoyed seeing Isi and her relationship with Geric from another perspective. I’m looking forward to reading RIVER SECRETS and I’m looking forward to the release of FOREST BORN in September.

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed THE GOOSE GIRL. Even though I wasn’t immediately captivated by the story, I found it enjoyable. I loved the premise of elemental speaking gifts, such as Isi’s wind-speaking gift. The language was quite fascinating and made for an interesting story. I absolutely adore Isi and I loved Geric. I loved their relationship and how it came to be.

I also loved Hale’s way with words. In an interview written in the back of ENNA BURNING, Hale described exactly the way I felt about her writing:

I’m so impressed with writers who grip the reader from the very beginning, but I can’t seem to do it. I’m cursed to have to build a story slowly, it seems. And I can’t do a book in two or three drafts as some do, but a minimum of a dozen full rewrites…. I love trying to find just the right words, just the right way to say something.

I thought Hale did an excellent job at “find[ing] just the right words, just the right way to say something.” She’s definitely a master wordsmith and I’m glad I gave her writing a try. I want to read her other books and I’m especially excited to read ENNA BURNING to see how the story progresses.

My Thoughts

I read the Definitive Edition of THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL which included 30% more material that had been cut from the original edition. The extra entries depict Anne’s struggles with growing up, finding her own way and opinions, dealing with what she felt was horrid treatment by her mother and the others in the Secret Annex, her changing body, etc. I felt like the Definitive Edition showed Anne in the light of being a teenage schoolgirl living in unusual, horrible circumstances rather than a flawless symbol that so many people see her as.

I’m not sure what I expected to find in Anne’s diary, but it wasn’t what I read. I’ve seen the movie and I guess I expected something a little more along those lines. Of course, however, the movie couldn’t portray the feeling of the diary because it had to show everyone rather than just Anne and the world from her POV. As I started to read the diary, I realized that Anne was a teenage girl who just wrote about her innermost thoughts and feelings as any other teenager would. The only difference I saw was that she seemed more educated and her life experiences were more traumatic than most teenagers.

One of my favorite entries was written on Saturday, June 20, 1942. It was Anne’s fourth entry and wrote the following:

Writing in a diary is a really strange experience for someone like me. Not only because I’ve never written anything before, but also because it seems to me that later on neither I nor anyone else will be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl.

I honestly think Anne was inspired to write so faithfully in her diary, to show the world what it was like to be a Jew living in hiding during World War II. Her style of writing was incredible for having been written by a “thirteen-year-old schoolgirl.” I can’t imagine any thirteen year old today writing as poignantly as she did, even if they were living in similar circumstances.

I thought Anne was very inspiring. Even though she was living in such horrible conditions, most of the time, she was strong and spunky. She dealt with bouts of depression and loneliness like anyone would in her situation, but she seemed to always realize and look for the good in things. She was always trying to improve herself. As far as her diary entries expressed, she never lost her faith in God, which was significant as a lot of people do in these types of situations. She was a great example of enduring to the end in the midst of horrible adversity.
