My Thoughts

I was really worried I wouldn’t like ANNE OF GREEN GABLES because classics and I don’t always get along, but I needn’t have worried because I adored Anne and her spunk.

I can see why this coming-of-age story is a classic. It’s endearing with its quaint setting and memorable characters. As I said, I love Anne. She reminded me of myself, other than her being ever the optimist. (I’m definitely not an optimist.) Like her, I love to name plants and inanimate objects, anthropomorphizing them. I’m extremely talkative and competitive. I love fiercely and tend to hold grudges even though I try not to. I related to her quite a lot.

I also loved the secondary characters, some more than others. Matthew was my favorite. He was such a kind soul, always looking out for Anne. I wish we had gotten to know Gilbert more. If only Anne had forgiven him before the last couple of pages of the novel. So much wasted time. And, even though I was often frustrated with Marilla’s no-nonsense ways, I liked her because I knew she loved Anne. I look forward to reading the rest of the series at some point in the future.

My Thoughts

BORN A CRIME was a very fascinating read. I learned a great deal about South Africa and the Apartheid. Truth be told, until I became familiar with Noah as a comedian, I didn’t know his existence was a crime during the Apartheid.

I honestly found Noah’s childhood interesting to read about because of not only how he was treated, but also because of the experiences he had. It amazes me how much he was considered an outsider in his own community because his skin was lighter than others. And, I thought it was interesting that language often helped him bridge the gap between his peers. He was only accepted because he was a “chameleon” and could speak their language as well as they could.

While reading Noah’s memoir, there were times I was laughing in stitches, other times I was in shock and disbelief, and yet other times I was angry at the injustices he witnessed and experienced. I know I’ve lived a very sheltered life, but I’ve never realized how easy my life has been until reading some of these experiences.

I’m glad I took the time to read BORN A CRIME. It opened my eyes to the atrocities of the world in other areas than just in European and American history. I now realize that while the Holocaust was a horrible time in the world, it’s not necessarily the worst thing that has happened. It all depends on your point-of-view and many of the world’s atrocities are glossed over still because people don’t want to take responsibility for the part they or their ancestors played in slavery or racism because it’s still very much alive today.

Update: When I read this a second time for book club, I listened to the audiobook. The audiobook is definitely the way to go. Trevor Noah narrates it himself. He reads each of the African languages and as he has a knack for accents, it made each language, person, and situation much more real.

My Thoughts

I adored ELIZA AND HER MONSTERS and the double entendre of the title. I sobbed as I read parts of Eliza’s story. Even though I’m not an introvert, per se, I related to Eliza and Wallace in so many ways. I shared some of their monsters in high school and reading about them made me want to hug them both and let them know that life gets better. I really wish her parents had been more supportive of her personality differences from them. I’m glad they got there in the end, but they made me angry.

My Thoughts

ALL THE TRUTH THAT’S IN ME was not what I was expecting at all. I didn’t realize it was historical fiction until I started reading it, which turned me off at first. However, since I like historical fiction, that quickly turned into a plus.

Interestingly enough, I almost DNFd this at 20% because I got sucked into another book and wasn’t sure if this book was holding my interest. I decided to give it another 5% and that 5% turned into another 20% so I kept reading it.

It took me a little bit to get used to the unique writing style. It was a bit slow, but I ended up enjoying the story and I really liked the characters, especially Judith and Lucas.

My Thoughts

I was so worried I wouldn’t like FURIOUSLY HAPPY based on what I had heard from other readers. Plus, non-fiction isn’t usually my cup of tea. I was pleasantly surprised, however.

Not only did I laugh a lot and I mean A LOT, but I found this to be a very raw, honest, unique look at how one person deals with their mental illness. At times, I felt like Lawson was stealing parts from my own life as she described hers. This book is definitely not for everyone, but I’m glad I read it, and I’ll read more from her as I feel like she and I are kindred spirits.
