My Thoughts

Dr. Jennifer L. Eberhardt is a graduate of Harvard and a professor at Stanford. Her career focuses on implicit bias. Throughout her career, she has spent time educating California officers about implicit bias and racial profiling. As a woman of color herself, she uses her education, training, experiences, and countless studies and research to explain how implicit bias causes racial disparities and inequities. She offers tools to challenge our biases to help solve the racial problem gripping the world.

She also talks about implicit bias in non-racial situations, such as blind orchestra auditions. I thought it was interesting to see how implicit bias affects different areas of life and how if that bias is taken away somehow those parts of life can improve and grow for the better.

I’m so glad I read BIASED. It was very eye-opening and interesting to read. I really enjoyed learning about implicit bias and about myself. I think this information is important for people (especially white people) to learn, maybe we’d have less racism.

My Thoughts

I loved NINTH HOUSE. It was a gritty tale of magic and murder among college students. I loved the premise that the secret societies at Yale deal with the paranormal and sometimes it gets out of hand. When it does, the house of Lethe’s there to clean it up and make sure there are no permanent ramifications. Honestly, I’ve always been interested in secret societies. I think they’re fascinating, especially when used for fodder in stories.

I really liked Alex, the FMC, and I have high hopes about her and a certain someone in the rest of the series. I loved that Bardugo had me questioning everyone’s motives and trying to figure out what happened. I’m glad the big douchebags got what they deserved. I was way off in the end and blown away at what happened and where it leads. I can’t wait to read the sequel when it releases.

My Thoughts

EDUCATED was very interesting to read. I especially found it interesting to read about how much her father and mother’s beliefs varied from mainstream Mormonism. It was funny to me that her father said the Illuminati had infiltrated the highest ranks of the religion. I wanted to ask him why he remained a member if that were true, but realized he wasn’t rational.

I think I have interesting connections to this story.

  1. I grew up 40 miles south of her. My brother-in-law grew up in the same community as her family and his family is very much like her family, but maybe not quite as extreme.
  2. I identify as a Mormon, although I don’t attend church regularly. I’m what Tara calls a mainstream Mormon as far as my own beliefs, even though I don’t agree with everything.
  3. The issues she had with her family when it came to dealing with abuse sustained by her older brother was very similar to what I went through with my family when dealing with abuse from my brother-in-law (same one from above). As far as the abuse is concerned, I feel that both Tara’s family and my family have something in common. Because the abuse is “unseen,” the victim is just making waves and driving wedges and is therefore the antagonist. Like Tara, I felt betrayed and abandoned. That part of the story was very surreal and hard for me to read. Yet, I felt a kinship toward her as well.

I’m not surprised Tara left Mormonism or let go of it as much as she did. I know she still feels a connection to it with what she said about her Doctorate. I haven’t left Mormonism, but as I said above, I don’t attend church regularly and struggle with some of the doctrine and policies.

I’m glad I read EDUCATED even though I was avoiding it and it was hard to read at times. Tara’s life and retelling of it was very insightful, interesting, and inspiring. Her story made me appreciate my education. It made me appreciate that my parents emphasized getting good grades and doing well in school.

My Thoughts

RESISTANCE is a powerful story of courage and bravery of the Jewish people during World War II. I loved learning about the true events that took place through this fictional story. I never knew about the couriers and what they risked for their people. I also didn’t really know much about the resistance fighters within the ghettos.

I thought Nielsen did a great job at showing the Jews’ courage as they suffered at the hands of the Germans and their own countrymen, yet risked their lives to help each other. Many of the Jews knew that their resistance movements wouldn’t “win.” The goal was resistance and standing up to the Nazis and showing the world that they wouldn’t be silenced. Because of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, the Allies finally decided to stop turning a blind eye to what was happening to the Jews in Europe.

My Thoughts

LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE was a thought-provoking book about class, race, and family relationships, particularly motherhood. I enjoyed the thoughts that swirled through my head as I read this and as I talked about it with my friend. The story was very captivating and held my interest from beginning to end. Though, I am disappointed in the ending as I wanted more of a resolution for some of the characters.
