Goodreads Synopsis

After Tova Sullivan works the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up, as a way to cope with her husband's recent passing and the disappearance of her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, over thirty years ago. She becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn't dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors--until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

My Thoughts

My IRL book club chose to read REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES for our January book. I’m so glad we chose it. Otherwise, I might never have read it and I absolutely adored this book.

As soon as I started reading REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES, I could tell it was going to suck me right in. I laughed, I cried, and I mostly smiled as I read this heart-warming story of love, loss, grief, and resilience.

“Not my fault I was dealt a shitty hand.”
“No, the deal is never anyone’s fault. But you control the way you play.”

REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES is mostly told in a third-person limited POV and a charming first-person POV from Marcellus, the octopus, the star of the book. Marcellus is smart, snarky, a little bit cranky, and a delightful narrator. I especially loved his friendship with Tova, the main human character. Their friendship reminds us, not in a preachy way, that animals know more than they let on and they each have feelings and deserve our kindness and respect.

Besides Marcellus, I loved the cast of characters in REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES. Tova is such a likable person despite being a bit closed off because of her grief. She reminded me a bit of my own grandmother whose family, like Tova’s, immigrated to the US while she was very young.

When I finished REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES, I promptly rated it 5 stars on Goodreads. I’m still in awe that this is Van Pelt’s debut and I think her next book has a lot to live up to. I’ll keep a look out for it, though, and make sure it goes straight to the top of my TBR.

Have you read REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES? If so, what did you think?

Trigger Warning

There is a trigger warning for loss of a parent, loss of a child, and loss of a spouse.

I wasn’t going to do any reading challenges this year because of how abysmal my reading was last year. I decided I miss participating in a couple of challenges, though, and succeeding in my goals for the challenges isn’t the point, participating and having fun is.

Play Book Tag

I’m a member of one group on Goodreads, the Play Book Tag group. I first found them in 2008 on Shelfari but after Amazon killed Shelfari in 2018, the group moved to Goodreads. (Oh how I miss Shelfari! )

Anyway, each month we vote on a “tag” (a theme) and share, discuss, and review books that fit the tag. I know I probably won’t read a book for all 12 tags this year so I’ve decided to try to read a book for at least 50% of the tags.

Unofficial Trim Challenge

The PBT group also hosts a few yearly challenges in addition to the monthly tags. I don’t participate in most of them because I read a lot less than most of the other members. There is one challenge I really like. It’s called the Unofficial Trim Challenge and its purpose is to “trim” our TBR.

Each of us creates a list of 24 books from our TBR. Every month, someone randomly picks a number between 1 and 24 that hasn’t already been picked. We then read the book listed for that number on our list. Because there are 24 numbers, this challenge will last for two years.

I created my list on my 2024 Reads page. I focused on the books I’ve gotten from Book of the Month to help me with one of my other goals. I hope to read each book for the corresponding number each month.

What about you? Are there any challenges your participating in this year?

Feeling

I’m feeling pretty good. I decided to stay on my med because I couldn’t deal with the lack of sleep. I’ve noticed that if I go to bed no later than midnight and I have an alarm set, I can get up without too much trouble. I’m still a bit drowsy, but I think most people are.

Blogging

Here’s what I posted on the blog this week:

Reading

I’ve been reading REMARKABLY BRIGHT CREATURES by Shelby Van Pelt this week. I should finish it some time today and then I’ll post my review on Wednesday. I’m going to start rereading SUNRUNNER’S FIRE by Melanie Rawn next. It’s the last of the Dragon Prince trilogy that I’ve been rereading.

I haven’t had much chance to listen to THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES audiobook. I hope I get more time this week.

Listening

I’ve been listening to music from movies this week. One of my favorites is “Dawn” from the 2005 PRIDE & PREJUDICE movie starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.

Watching

I couldn’t sleep on Tuesday night so I ended up watching the 2005 PRIDE & PREJUDICE movie on my phone while I was in bed. I’m part of the minority who like this version better than the BBC one starring Colin Firth.

Corey and I watched DIVERGENT and INSURGENT on Friday and ALLEGIANT on Saturday. It’s too bad ALLEGIANT didn’t do better in the theaters so the movie studio would’ve green lit the fourth movie. I need to reread the trilogy. I’d forgotten how much I like the story.

Loving

I love my new 2024 Reads page. I love some of the blogging tools I have through the Enfold theme on WordPress.

Wanting

I want to put a series post together some time. It’ll take some time with what I have in mind. I’m scheduling some time to work on it so I actually follow through with my ideas.

Needing

I need to start physical therapy this week. I went to an orthopedic doctor on Tuesday. My hips and knees have been causing me some pain. My right side’s much weaker than my left side because I’ve been compensating for pain and stiffness caused by my injury in October 2022.

I’m a little nervous because I’ve never done physical therapy. I’m also excited because I’d like to walk up and down the stairs normally and I’d like to start walking again.

How was your week? Anything exciting happen?

Today’s Question(s) is …

How many books are on your “to be read” list?

My Answer(s) is …

Um… My TBR has over 1500 books on it and it grows much faster than I can read. My TBR has EVERY book I want to read on it, not just the books I own in physical or electronic form. I do cull my list once or twice a year and remove the books I’m no longer interested in reading. It can feel very overwhelming at times. I know I won’t even make a dent in my list before I die, but I still want to keep a list of all the books I might be interested in.

What about you? How many books do you have on your TBR?

That’s it! Another Bout of Books has come and gone. I had a great time focusing on my reading this week. I only participated in the Instagram challenge on the first day, though, oh well.

I hope everyone who participated had just as much fun as I did. Thank you, Amanda and Kelly, for all the hard work you put into making Bout of Books as much fun as it is each and every time!

Don’t forget that the next Bout of Books is May 13 to 19, 2024.

Totals

I had a great week. Here are my totals!

Pages Read: 597
Hours Read: 21 hrs 44 min
Books Finished: The Star Scroll (also from 4% to 16% in The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes)

How was your week? Did you meet your goals?
