Things that Make Me Feel Happy

In Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), two of the things we learn are called Emotion Regulation and Distress Tolerance. Emotion Regulation refers to our ability to regulate our emotion(s) in difficult situations and not act on potentially ineffective urges (e.g., self-harm, rage quit a desired activity, damage a positive relationship). Distress Tolerance is a set of skills that help us when our emotions are in dysregulation and help us make it through difficult situations without making it worse.

While there are specific skills in DBT that’ll help almost everyone, what helps one person may not help another. Because of this, it’s good for us to remember things that we can observe with our senses (see, hear, touch, taste, or smell) that make us feel happy. Here are some of mine (in no particular order):

  • Listening to and cuddling with a purring kitty
  • Singing along to the “Numa Numa” song
  • Playing Animal Crossing on my Switch
  • Crocheting and/or knitting
  • Cuddling up in my heating blanket
  • Taking a nap
  • Seeing a llama in person 🦙
  • Drinking herbal tea or hot chocolate
  • Making a heater tent with a blanket and air vent in the late fall, winter, and early spring
  • Reading a favorite scene in a book
  • Watching a favorite movie
  • Talking to or spending time with friends
  • Soaking and/or reading in the bathtub
  • Praying
  • Getting a hug from a loved one
  • Eating pink bubblegum ice cream

What are some things that make you feel happy and would help you during a rough situation?
