Top Ten Tuesday: Holiday Books

Since I’ve only been reading (as a hobby) for the last three years, I don’t really have any books that get me in the holiday spirit.  I’ve always been one who doesn’t watch holiday movies or read holiday books because most of them are really cheesy.  However, I think I need to change my attitude about that and I’m going to start by reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens this year.

Until I read more holiday books, however, I thought I’d post my top ten … I mean five … list of books with snow and a holiday mentioned in them.

  1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis: Whenever I think about snow in books, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe comes to mind first.  Plus, the Pevensies meet Father Christmas.
  2. Harry Potter by JK Rowling: Every book in this series mentions snow and Christmas, and I love this series so, of course, it’s on my list.
  3. The Dark Divine by Bree Despain: This book takes place around Thanksgiving so not only does it qualify as a book with snow in it, it also qualifies as a holiday book.
  4. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater: If you know the premise of this story, then you know there’s a lot of snow in it and they do talk about Christmas as well.
  5. Night by Elie Wiesel: Elie mentions having to walk miles and miles in the snow from one concentration camp to another.  He also mentions the Jews in his cell block celebrating one of the Jewish holidays as best as they could under the circumstances they were in.  I don’t know how much this book gets me in the holiday spirit, but it does make me grateful that I didn’t have to live through the Holocaust.

  1. My list is not overly sentimental. I especially recommend Christmas Memory and Gift of the Magi. Here is my list of Top Ten Books to Read During the Holidays.

I added the first line of my selections. Perhaps that will help you decide if you want to read any of my selections.

  3. Jamie says:

I feel the same way about the majority of Christmas books! I never wanted to read them because of the “cheese” factor!

  4. Kayla says:

My top ten “Get in the Spirit” books (in no particular order other than the first one)are these:
    1. The Bible
    2. Twas the Night Before Christmas
    3. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
    4. The Gift of the Magi
    5. The Polar Express (but I hate the movie)
    6. Snowmen at Christmas
    7. The Legend of Papa Noel: A Cajun Christmas Story
    8. Bear Stays up for Christmas
    9. A Christmas Carol
    10. and… I’ve stalled out… hmm… well, those are my favorite nine. I cannot stand books like The Christmas Box. They are so maudlin they make me itch!

Thanks for that list. You’d think that I would have read How the Grinch Stole Christmas at some point during my life, but I’ve only seen the movie (original). I think I’ll go buy this book and read it. I forgot about The Bible ( ) and Twas the Night Before Christmas.
