The Next Iron Chef

Happy birthday, Sheridan! :D

Yesterday, Corey and I went to a birthday party for my co-worker Becky. There was a lot of yummy food thanks to Becky’s ingenious theme–Iron Chef. Each of the invitees were supposed to bring a dish with the secret ingredient, hoping they’ll be the next Iron Chef. The secret ingredient was oranges. I decided to make a fruit pizza.

Me & CoreyShe invited a lot of her family and friends, and a few of us from work. The party kind of split up into three groups: Becky’s family, Becky’s friends, and her co-workers. The co-workers were the coolest group of them all and had a lot of fun! :D

We played games and had fun spending time together. Erin, Jeff, Alan, and I were the co-workers that showed up. Steve was invited to, but he and his wife decided they were too good for us and didn’t come. ;)

We played Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader, which was a lot of fun once we figured out how the game went. For such a simple game on TV, the game itself is fairly complicated to figure out. My team (Erin, Jeff, and me) won, but only after three death match rounds!  I guess we’re all pretty smart cookies.

We also played Simpson’s Loser Takes All. That’s a fun game! The point is to end up with the least amount of money and snack foods. So, to win, you’re basically supposed to lose. Erin ended up winning/losing and Jeff ended up losing/winning.

Me as The Iron ChefThe winner of the Iron Chef was … me! :D My fruit pizza was a hit! Everyone loved it. Each food item could get a total of 100 points. The fruit pizza ended up with 94 points. There was a tie for second place with 88 points, so you can see how much my pizza was loved. I was so excited because I never win contests. Woo hoo! :D It has totally made my decade! Becky let me wear her birthday tiara for a few minutes to signify the prestige of my achievement.

I decided to post the recipe for those who want it.

Sugar Cookie Dough Crust
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.

In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in egg and vanilla. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.Roll dough to 1/8 of an inch thick and place on 16-inch greased pizza pan.

Cook for 8-10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Cool.

Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 8 oz. cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
Cream together cheese, vanilla, and sugar. Spread over cooled cookie crust.

Fruit
I used the following fresh fruit on my pizza, but you can use canned fruit and any types of fruit you like or want. (I wanted strawberries, but the store didn’t have any. :( )
  • Kiwi
  • Bananas
  • Peaches
  • Raspberries
  • Pineapple
  • Tangelos
  • Blueberries
Cut/slice fruit and arrange on frosted crust to your liking.

Glaze
  • 1 cup sugar
  • dash of salt
  • 1 cup orange juice
  • 2 Tbsp. cornstarch
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
Mix sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Add water, orange juice, and lemon juice in saucepan. Bring to a boil; cook 1 minute until slightly thickened. Cool. Pour over fruit and place in refrigerator until ready to serve.

Wow, I didn’t realize how complicated this recipe was. I really enjoyed the food, but I don’t know if I would have the patience to replicate the dish. I think that I will have to stick with begging you to bring it to all my events.

  2. Christie says:

Ooh, I love fruit pizza. Maybe you can bless us with that next time we gather. Yummy. Maybe I’ll even try to make it myself.

  3. Erin says:

I like this post because it says my name 3 times. I also like your fruit pizza, but not as much as I like seeing my name in print.

  4. Erin says:

Also, in reference to the first paragraph of this post, I like to consider myself both Becky’s co-worker and her friend. I’m in 2 of the 3 groups! Now all I’ve got to do is marry her brother or be adopted by her parents and I’ll be in all 3. I have a new goal in life!

  5. Jenni Elyse says:

True! I consider myself Becky’s friend as well. I guess I was just trying to separate the groups since her “other” friends kept to themselves. ;)

  6. LeAnn says:

I’ve been looking all over for that recipe. You need to post pics so I can see how it looks. Glad you had a ton of fun, since I couldn’t talk to you very long the day before. lol Love Ya!
