The Classics Spin

classicsclubI’m not part of The Classics Club or anything, but I saw this spin on a few blogs and thought I’d join in because I want to become more familiar with classics. I try to make it a point to read two a year. Maybe, this will help me get to one of them.

Here are the rules for The Classics Spin:

  • Go to your blog.
  • Pick twenty books that you’ve got left to read from your Classics Club List. (I’m just going to use classics on my TBR list since I don’t have a Classics Club List.)
  • Try to challenge yourself: list five you are dreading/hesitant to read, five you can’t WAIT to read, five you are neutral about, and five free choice (favorite author, rereads, ancients–whatever you choose.)
  • Post that list, numbered 1-20, on your blog by next Monday (2/18/2013).
  • Monday morning, we’ll announce a number from 1-20. Go to the list of twenty books you posted and select the book that corresponds to the number we announce.
  • The challenge is to read that book by April 1, even if it’s an icky one you dread reading! (No fair not listing any scary ones!)

Here’s my list. I’m listing them alphabetically by author’s last name so I don’t play favorites. But, there are definitely ones I’m dreading on this list!

  1. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
  2. Inferno by Dante Alighieri
  3. Emma by Jane Austen
  4. Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
  5. Persuasion by Jane Austen
  6. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
  7. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
  8. Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
  9. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
  10. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
  11. The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
  12. The Lord of the Flies by William Golding
  13. A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway
  14. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
  15. Moby Dick by Herman Melville
  16. Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery

  1. Ha! Welcome. :)

  2. Well, you have to read all the Austen books first. ;)

  3. You shouldn’t dread any of them! All awesome ones!

  4. Sounds interesting, but I’ve already got a giant pile of non-renewable library books on my night stand that I NEED to finish. Like yesterday! I usually try to throw in a “random” book after every 4 or 5 “super excited about” books, but the keyword there is try… ;)

  5. I didn’t like Lord of the Flies. It was disturbing. I suggest starting with Emma or Anne of Green Gables! I love them!

    • Many people have told me that Lord of the Flies is disturbing and they didn’t like it. I read part of it in school, but not all of it. I’m interested to see if I’ll think of it differently as an adult. I don’t know.

I’m planning to read Little Women first, but I want to get to Anne of Green Gables very soon! :D

  6. You’re almost half way to having your very own Classics Club list of 50!
Glad to see you found us one way or another. This little challenges devised by the good folk at CC are a great way to keep us track with our reading targets (and fun!)
Good luck – you’ve got some great titles on your list.

  7. With the exception of Lord of the Flies, Moby Dick, and Grapes of Wrath, I enjoyed at least *some* elements of all the rest of them–so, great picks! Good luck and have fun!
