I saw this Q&A at Bibliobabe and I had to join in because it looked too fun to pass up. If you’ve posted this too, leave a comment with a link to your answers.
Do you snack while you read? If so, what is your favorite reading snack?
I normally don’t snack when I read. I have a fear of getting food or crumbs on my books. And, I snack enough other times that I really shouldn’t snack when I read.
What is your favorite drink while reading?
Water.
Do you tend to mark your books as you read? Or, does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
I never marked in my books until last semester. My teacher taught us to annotate our books so that we could pick up the themes and connections better. I still don’t like to mark in my regular books, but it’s a must for my textbooks now. I might use Post-it notes in my books from now on because I really want to see how much more I’d get out of a book if I paid attention to certain things.
How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book open?
Bookmarks. I don’t like the idea of dog-earring my pages. It makes me cringe. I have about 20 (or so) bookmarks that I cycle through depending on my mood. Right now, I’m using a magnet bookmark that says, “All the wonders you seek are within yourself.”
Do you prefer fiction, non-fiction, or both?
I prefer fiction, but I have read a few non-fiction books. Non-fiction books can be good, but it really depends on how dry they are. I hate encyclopedia-esque books. They’re just too boring to me and I don’t want them to turn me off of reading. Maybe, I’ll appreciate them someday.
Are you a person who tends to read to the end of a chapter, or can you stop anywhere?
I have to read to the end of the chapter. I hate stopping in the middle. I will stop if I absolutely have to, but I don’t like it.
Are you the type of person to throw a book across the room or on the floor if the author irritates you?
I’ve never done that to a book. Besides, I’m very easy to please. Although, I did want to scream when I first read the Great Dog Snog in Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer. I was so angry, but thankfully, my friend Anna encouraged me to keep going and I was happy I did.
If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop and look it up right away?
I used to and then I stopped. However, I’m getting back in the habit again because it’s necessary to keep up in my English classes.
What are you currently reading?
Secret Speakers and the Search for Selador’s Gate by KSR Kingworth (aka Karey Shane).
What is the last book you bought?
I bought five books on Saturday thanks to an awesome coupon I had for Borders. I bought Elantris, the Mistborn trilogy, and The Lovely Bones.
Are you the type of person that reads one book at a time, or can you read more than one?
I read one book at a time. I can’t read more than one because I like to be immersed into the world I’m reading about so jumping from world to world doesn’t allow me to do that as well.
Do you have a favorite time/place to read?
Yes and no. I love to read any time of the day, and I’ll read anywhere. However, I love to read in the tub because both are so relaxing.
Do you prefer series or stand-alone books?
I tend to read series, but I like both.
Is there a specific book or author you find yourself recommending over and over?
The Hunger Games and Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. They’re awesome books and I think everyone should read them. Not only are the stories interesting and fun, but they have great social morals too.
How do you organize your books (by genre, title, author’s last name, etc.)?
I organize my books alphabetically by author, then alphabetically by series name, then chronologically in series order, and finally alphabetically by title for stand-alone books.

That was fun, Jenni!
Thanks, Kimberly! I thought so too.
That was fun! I agree with you about the dog-earing. I’m a bookmark girl myself. Also, I just heard about the Mistborn….(was that it) series. I put it on hold at the library.
Rebecca – It is a series. It’s actually a trilogy. Ali has read it and really loved it. You’ll have to let me know what you think when you get to read it. I probably won’t get to it for a while with school and everything else I need to read.
This was great fun reading through your preferences, Jenni. I tend to treat my books with a lot of respect, and I don’t ever throw them or dog-ear them. I have thrown a book at least once in my life, however, and that was into the trash. Cuz it was trash. Otherwise, I’m pretty reverential about books–I love them so much!
Deon – I have a hard time lending my books to people because I’m afraid they won’t take as good of care of them as I do. There are a few people I trust and I’ll lend them my books, but normally, I’m very selfish.
I just read your comment to Deon. I was just going to ask you to lend me “The Lovely Bones” after you finished reading it, but now I won’t!
I can’t stand to even keep the dust cover on my books for fear that they will get damaged, so no, I don’t dog ear or leave my books open either. I am totally fine with a bookmarker.
Jenifer – You can borrow my book. I trust you.
Great Q&A! I can’t snack and read either!
h and….
1. I don’t snack while reading because my mindful eating book says that I should only eat when I’m eating. Apparently that is how you control your eating and LOSE WEIGHT!
2. I’m a water drinker.
3. I only write in Nonfiction textbooky types of books. Otherwise HORRIFYING. However I am teaching my students to take notes/annotate their books both fiction and nonfiction, like you said to make connections and stuff. And yes I do it on Post-its.
4. I find dog earring just as horrifying. I didn’t like book marks until I found Mandy’s book thongs. The problem with those is I want one personalized for every book I read and that’s just bad for the budget.
5. Fiction. But some times I try nonfiction. I find it very difficult to read because it doesn’t absorb me.
6. I like to read the whole book. No stopping. But other than that I stop anywhere.
7. I can’t throw books. But I have been VERY tempted with two. The witch of blackbird pond as a 3rd grader and Harry Potter Five.
8. Sometimes, if I’m reading more shallowly. When I’m deep in I don’t tend to notice. Today actually I had to look two up.
9. I’m reading: Spells by Aprilynn Pike. The Warriors Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold (re-reading via audiobook), By Heresies Distressed by David Weber and Mindful Eating (nonfiction!) by Jan Chozen Bays.
I JUST finished The Dead Tossed Waves.
No idea what’s up next…..maybe the new Kelley Armstrong.
10. The new Sookie. But I bought Spells and the New Kelley Armstrong by Kindle for Mac. Somehow it doesn’t feel like that counts.
11. A few. Until it sucks me in. Then I have to finish the one. But I usually have one going on iPod, one going on the Kindle and one in book form. For all the different places I am and how they accommodate reading.
12. If I could all day everywhere. My favorite place is in the bath.
13. Series. Although it gets hard to wait the YEARS for people to finish. JK Rowling for example.
14. Yes, but very few people have read her.
15. By Genre…plus. Like I have shelves for certain authors that warrant their own shelf outside the general genre shelves.
Tamara – Thanks! I thought it was a lot of fun.
Ouisa – I still need to buy a book thong. I just haven’t done it yet. I’d probably want one for each book, too.
Love that we posted this meme the same day! Fun! I really liked reading all your responses! I so agree with you about not writing in books or dog-earing them. Glad you had a fun shopping spree Saturday! Borders coupons rock. Love the quote on your magnetic bookmark.
I was not a fan of the Great Dog Snog either & am so glad we had the Lex to talk all those frustrations and irritations out, much more fun and productive than hurling a book across the room.
The idea of reading in the tub does sound relaxing, but I am way too afraid that I will accidentally drop my book in the tub (or handle it with wet hands) so I’ve never tried it.
Violet – I always make sure my hands don’t go down in the tub, so I never have to worry about them being wet when they handle the book. However, the dropping is always a concern. I’m just really careful.
You would DIE if you knew my reading habits! I firmly believe in a book that looks well used, is well used. Although I am VERY respectful when I borrow because I know that most people don’t agree with my methods
Aymee – I have died when I found out how you treat your books.
I’m more laxed about my paperbacks, but my hardbacks and especially my signed books (hardbacks or paperbacks) have to be immaculate.
