Blog Organization

How do you categorize the posts on your blog?  I’m really picky and I’m trying to develop a better system.  I love to be organized, but sometimes too much organization is just another form of being disorganized.  Does that make sense?

I’ve noticed that whether it be categorizing music, books, blog posts, etc., I like to keep topics as general as possible.  However, I’m realizing that isn’t always the best way.  For example, on my iPod I have over 150 songs in my Favorites playlist.  I know I should put them into sub-categories because I can’t listen to every song when I listen to my playlist.  But, I have a hard time sub-categorizing them.

Do you have a method to your madness?  I sure need one.

I just pull out the main topic and make it a tag. So if it’s all about music or one of the points in it are music I make it music. Yeah, don’t know if that helps. You’ve seen my blog though!

For the history though, I archive it by month.

That’s how I usually categorize too. I’m trying to decide if I want to sub-categorize, though. I’ve started doing it and I think it’s working, but I’m wondering if it’s just too much. People probably don’t even pay attention to the categories anyway. It’s more for my sanity, you know?

I categorize about things I know I’ll talk a lot about. If it’s something I don’t talk about often I use a general tag like ‘Adventures’ or something of the like.

  4. For my CF blog I only have about a dozen categories. I figure that the categories are mainly for my friends to find similar things on my blog that interest them (I honestly doubt people use it much though). On my family blog I have probably 2 or 3 times as many just because that one is specific for me and when I print it out I’m going to have an index like a yearbook I think. :) Good luck figureing it out. Make it you though, thats what makes blogging fun.

  5. Ok I will say one more thing on the topic. I have noticed on a few blogs I go to that the folks give tags to EVERYTHING. Like if they mention tissues or pencil or pushpins for example. Honestly how likely is that to come up again in another post this year? I think the key to the topics is obviously that you use them enough there are more than two things in each category. Unless of course you’re starting out and building up your categories but thats different. I seriously think this one blog I see has hundreds of tags. It makes my head spin. :)

Megan – That’s usually what I do too. It’s nice to know that I’m not completely off base.

Debbie – I agree with you completely about tagging everything. That bugs! That’s why I’ve tried to be general rather than specific. I think I’ve decided based on the feedback I’ve received to leave my categorizing the same with a few slight changes. Just nothing major since I’m already doing a pretty good job. ;)

I’m sorry! I wish I could help. I am not sure my blog is very organized!

  8. Beth says:

I’m more of a “go with the flow” kind of blogger! I have a hard enough time just keeping my posts up to date! Good luck with the organization process!

  9. Jenni Elyse says:

Jen – I understand how you feel. I think about my blog sometimes.

Beth – I would like to be more of a “go with the flow” kind of blogger/person, but I just don’t seem to be able to do that.
