Discussion Questions

I’m doing something a little different with the questions this time around since it’s the last set of questions we’ll have. Hopefully, you’re not disappointed in the questions I ask as they’re not quite as thought-provoking as Suey’s or Kami’s questions were.

  1. Is this your first time reading Anne of Green Gables or a reread? Either way, what did you think about it?
  2. If this is your first time reading Anne of Green Gables, do you plan to read the rest of the series? If you’ve read Anne of Green Gables before, have you read the rest of the series? What do you think about it?
  3. Who is your favorite character and why?
  4. Who is your least favorite character and why?
  5. What was your favorite scene and why?
  6. What did you think about the last third of the book and why?

My Answers

  1. This is my first time reading it. I was afraid I wouldn’t like it because classics and I usually aren’t very good friends, but I loved it!
  2. I would at least love to read Anne of Avonlea so that I can enjoy some of that romance that everyone talks about. 😉 We’ll see how I feel about the rest of the series after I finish it.
  3. Besides Anne, Matthew is my favorite. I love how much he loves Anne. And, even though he’s not part of bringing her up, he still interjects his own opinion now and then.
  4. To be honest, it’s the no-nonsense women like Mrs. Barry and Marilla. I dislike how rigid they are. They need to lighten up a little bit. Now, don’t get me wrong. I do like Marilla. I just wish she would act on her laughing impulses.
  5. I loved that Matthew asked Rachel Lynde to make Anne a dress with puffed sleeves because he noticed she wasn’t dressed like the other girls. It just gave me the warm fuzzies all over.
  6. I really enjoyed the last third of the book. However, I wonder why the book spent so much time on Anne as an 11-year-old girl and then flew through the other years? I felt like Montgomery barely touched on some of the years. Why has her 11th year so important? Was it just because that was her first year on Prince Edward Island? Even though Anne flew through these years, I still enjoyed seeing her grow up, seeing her progress and excel. My one criticism is that I wish Anne had forgiven Gilbert sooner than the last few pages of the book. There was so much lost time! I guess we’re meant to keep reading.

Anne of Green Gables Readalong Discussion #2

First, let’s get some business out of the way! Don’t forget to visit Kami’s blog (Kami’s Library Thoughts) because she posted the discussion questions for chapters 14-26 today! And, don’t forget to join the Twitter chat tonight at 7:00 pm MDT/9:00 pm EDT. Kami (@kamisthoughts) will be hosting. We’ll be using #GreenGablesRAL during the chat. It should be tons of fun! 🎉

We’re reading chapters 27-38 next, and I’ll post the discussion questions on my blog on March 31.

Discussion Questions

1. Anne has a gift for loving nature in all its forms. She even gives them delightful names. Do you find yourself appreciating nature more as you read this?

To be honest, I haven’t really thought about it. I love all the names she gives things because it reminds me of me since I like to anthropomorphize things. I’ll pay attention to this more during the last third of the book.

2. We have finally met Gilbert! What do you think of him? Do you think Anne is justified in hating him so much?

We don’t know much about him yet except that he’s competitive with Anne. I want to know more about him. I want Anne to get over her grudge. No, I don’t think she’s justified in hating him so much. Sure, he humiliated her in front of everyone, but she needs to get over it, especially so the freaking romance can begin!

3. Anne’s imagination finally got the better of her in the Haunted Wood. Do you think she learned anything from that experience? Do you think she’ll tone down the imagination a bit?

I think with the help of Mrs. Allen, she’s learned to use her imagination in more constructive ways. This part actually made me laugh because I’ve made myself afraid so many times when there’s been nothing to be afraid of. I’m still deathly afraid of certain things because of my imagination. We all need to take a page out of Anne’s book and put our imagination to better uses unless we’re like Stephen King and like to be afraid, lol.

4. What do you think of Diana and the other school girls? Do you think Anne chose wisely for her bosom friend?

I like Diana. I think she complements Anne well. She helps rein her in a bit, if you will. I think Anne did choose wisely because Diana seems fiercely loyal and like she has a good head on her shoulders even if her imagination isn’t quite as strong.

5. I’ve always dreamed of visiting Prince Edward Island some day. Do you want to visit there also? What other real life literature places do you want to visit?

Yes, I’d love to visit PEI. I’d also love to visit England and Scotland and see some of the English manors to help better imagine places like Pemberley and Edenbrooke. Of course, the place I really want to visit is completely fictional and it breaks my heart. Why, oh why does Hogwarts not exist?! 😭😂

Anne of Green Gables Readalong Discussion #1

First, let’s get some business out of the way! Don’t forget to visit Suey’s blog (It’s All About Books) because she posted the discussion questions for chapters 1-13 today! And, don’t forget to join the Twitter chat tomorrow (March 12) at 6:00 pm MDT/8:00 pm EDT. Suey (@sueysays) will be hosting. We’ll be using #GreenGablesRAL during the chat. It should be tons of fun! 🎉

We’re reading chapters 14-26 next, and Kami will post the discussion questions on her blog (Kami’s Library Thoughts) on March 22.

Second, I was worried I wasn’t going to like Anne of Green Gables because most classics are only so so for me, but I’m really enjoying it! I love Anne. She’s a talkative creature. She reminds me of me at her age. I can’t wait to keep reading!

Discussion Questions

Holy hard questions, Batman! 😳

1. In chapter 2, when Matthew is driving Anne back to Green Gables, she asks him: “Isn’t it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive.” Given her tragic childhood, how do you think Anne is able to maintain such a positive attitude?

Some people are just able to stay upbeat and positive come what may. I’m not one of those people. I don’t know if it’s genetics, mental illness, nature vs. nurture, but some people are just positive no matter what.

2. Anne is insistent on renaming places and inanimate things. Why do you think she does this?

As we’ve seen in these first thirteen chapters, she has a very active imagination. I think her imagination is one way she has learned to cope with her tragic childhood. If she imagines beautiful, happy things, then life is better and worth living. I guess this could be a good answer for the first question too. 😂

3. Marilla gives several reasons for finally deciding to keep Anne. What reason do you think most changed her mind?

Even though Marilla is a no-nonsense type of woman, she still has a heart. I think she realized what Anne’s life would’ve been like had she gone to live with Mrs. Blewett and she knew Anne’s spirit would’ve eventually been broken. Plus, I think Anne has a way of worming her way into your heart.

4. If Anne grew up today, would she have been happier with how she looked? What would she have pined for, looks- and fashion-wise? What is our society’s equivalent of plumpness, dark hair, and puffed sleeves?

She’d still want beautiful things. She’d probably want designer clothes and/or shoes, maybe, but I don’t think she’d be a diva about it. She’d be happy with being as skinny as she is. I still think the color of her hair would bother her, but she could always dye it or lighten it. Well, maybe not with Marilla as her guardian. 😂

5. How would Anne have turned out if Marilla had let Mrs. Blewett take her? Would that life have crushed Anne’s imaginative spirit, or would she have changed in a different way?

I honestly think Anne’s spirit would’ve eventually been broken if she hadn’t gone to live at Green Gables. There’s only so much one person can endure without human affection.
