Festival of Trees

My friend Hannah and I went to the Festival of Trees on Saturday.  We were going to go horseback riding, but we decided it would be too late and too cold when both of us could go, and Saturday was the last day the Festival of Trees was open.

For those of you who don’t know what the Festival of Trees is, it’s a fund-raising event that earns money for the Primary Children’s Hospital.  It costs a small fee to enter the festival and the trees, gingerbread houses, and other items are auctioned off to local businesses and families.  Every penny raised from the event is donated to the hospital.

This is the first year I’ve ever gone to the Festival of Trees.  (My friends and I donated and decorated a tree a couple of years ago, but I didn’t get the chance to go check it out.)  I had a lot of fun with Hannah.  The trees and gingerbread houses were amazing.  I’d love to participate in the event again some time.  If I did, I think I’d make a The Nightmare Before Christmas tree.  (I missed the one at the festival this year because we didn’t get a chance to see the smaller trees.)

Most of the gingerbread houses were fantastic.  But, for me, a few outshined the others.

I took a few pictures of the trees themselves.  But, I mostly took pictures of the ornaments or the items surrounding the tree.  I guess when I go again, I’ll know not to just look for artistic shots.

Here are some of the ornaments and decorations I liked:

My friend Hannah kept asking me if I’d buy this tree or that.  My most common response was, “For the kids.”  Translation: “I don’t really like the style of this tree, but I’d buy it if I had the money because it goes to help the Primary Children’s Hospital.”  I really liked a lot of the trees, but some of them were too over-the-top to be considered as a tree I’d put in my home.  Or, they just weren’t my style, like the overly country-decorating-style type of trees and the Santa-themed trees.  (I had enough Santa-themed decorations growing up–because my mother is obsessed with him–that I don’t think I’ll ever decorate with Santa.  I’ll focus on snowmen or nativities or something else.)  I really liked the tree on the left, though.  I loved everything about it–the ornaments, the color, the style, etc.  It was simple yet elegant.  The only thing I’d possibly change is adding some purple bulbs because I really like purple, green, and blue together and I might also have varied the bulb sizes.

My favorite thing about the entire night was when the bagpipes were played.  I love bagpipes.  I love everything about them.  I could hear them far off and I kept craning my head over the trees and people to find them.  Then, I realized the group was doing a march through the expo center.  I made my way to the front of the line so I could get a picture.  It was so cool to be that close to the sound.

Halloween

Corey and I weren’t planning to do much for Halloween because we haven’t had the time to do anything and I’ve been really sick for the last few days.  However, yesterday at about noon, I decided I wanted to buy a couple of pumpkins to carve.  I’ve always enjoyed carving pumpkins, but I hate cleaning them.  My friend Ali told me the pumpkins she bought at Macey’s weren’t too bad to clean out and they were only $.09/pound.  I decided to check them out.  When I got to Macey’s, the price had gone up, but only to $.13/pound and the two pumpkins I bought, at about $4.00 a piece, were the smallest they had.  Yes, I said smallest.

Around 6:00 pm, Corey and I went over to our friends’ house to see their kids dressed up in their Halloween costumes.  It’s been a tradition of ours since Jack was about two years old.  This year, Jack was Maleficent as a dragon, Sheridan was Princess Aurora, and Henry was Prince Phillip.  Ali made Sheridan’s dress without a pattern and Henry’s costume as well.  They both turned out awesome!

Just as we did for the previous two Halloweens, Corey and I wore our brain slugs again.  Corey also had a “slurm” T-shirt on so he could be dressed up as a Futurama extra.  The slugs are an easy costume.  All we have to do is put them on our heads.  Some of the comments I got because of my slug astounded me, though.  People actually thought it was a hat and that I’d wear it any time other than Halloween.

It’s kind of cool to see how much I’ve changed (haven’t changed) in the last three years.

Christmas Aminekos

Corey and I didn’t have a lot of money for Christmas this year and because we were spending Christmas with his family, I wanted to make sure his nieces got a present from us.  I decided to crochet them aminekos.  I did an amineko for me last year so I knew they’d turn out well.  Also, all three girls love cats and because I could make them in their favorite color, I was sure they’d be a hit.

I gave the girls their cat yesterday afternoon.  They seemed to love them.  Brooklyn even named her kitty (far left) Nita.  Addi’s kitty is in the middle and Sierra’s kitty is the purple one.

Sierra’s cat is my favorite. Apart from the obvious of it being purple, I feel like it’s also my best out of the three as I improved my technique with each one. I like it so much I’ve decided to make a purple one for me to go along with Smokie.

I can see every flaw, but I’m trying to look at them as God would His children.  I’m trying to realize the flaws give each one their own personality and character even though it’s against my perfectionist nature to like something I’ve made that’s not perfect.

Anyway, I’m glad each of the girls like their kitties and I hope they can enjoy them for many years to come.

Christmas Party with My Peeps

Last Friday, I went to a party with my friends.  We decided to have a gift exchange, eat yummy food, and just enjoy each other’s company.

When we walked into the party, we noticed a cardboard stand-up of Taylor Lautner, the actor who portrays Jacob Black in the movies.  Christie and Cami bought it for Danylle because she loves Jacob Black.  They even wrote a fun poem to go with him.

I had my second experience with a cracker since Danylle gave each of us one.  I got another green hat, but Sue was kind enough to trade me. It might have something to do with the fact that she hates purple. I also got a yo-yo in it and a joke. “Q: Where do sick gnomes go?  A: To the Elf Centre.”

We had Cafe Rio style salads with real Cafe Rio tortillas and dressing.  It was really yummy!  But, we always have good food at our parties.  Christie found an ice cream cake decorated like New Moon so she bought it for the party.  It was very neat!  The things you can do with cakes.

After dinner, we had a gift exchange.  It was lots of fun.  It seemed that everyone was in sync with who they were giving to because everyone loved their gifts.  Luisa had me and I never dreamed she’d get me the thing I wanted the most for Christmas–a slanket! I’ve already put it to good use at work because the air conditioner blows right on me.

The party was a lot of fun.  Cami and Christie did a wonderful job of putting it together!  I love these women so much and I’m so glad they’re my friends.  I look forward to another year of great fun!

Christmas Card 2009

I wanted to post the Christmas card I e-mailed to family and friends just in case I forgot someone.  If I didn’t e-mail this to you, it wasn’t on purpose.  It’s probably because I don’t have your e-mail address (or I may have an old one) in my address book.

The image I used to create this card was designed by Tracy Apps.  She does beautiful work.  Check it out.
