30 Days of Book Discussion: Day 4

Day 4: Favorite Book of My Favorite Series

From Day 3, you know that Harry Potter is my favorite series. And from Day 2, you know that Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite story in the series. But, you also know from Day 2 that Azkaban isn’t my favorite book in the series anymore. How does that work? I’ll tell you.

I absolutely love Prisoner of Azkaban. There’s so much about the story to love as I said in my Day 2 post. But, I can’t help but love Deathly Hallows as a book more because it ties everything together.

I loved getting all my questions answered. I loved that all my theories about Harry Potter came true. I loved finally seeing Ron and Hermione together. I loved seeing Neville get his moment in the spotlight! I loved the story of the deathly hallows and trying to figure out what each of the horcruxes were. I also loved finding out more about Dumbledore, even if it wasn’t what I expected. And, I loved the duels, especially the one between Snape and McGonagall.

I loved the pure, raw emotion I felt while I read this book. I was happy, excited, and a little bit sad that I finally knew how it all ended. I cried hard when Hedwig and Dobby died. I cried even harder when Harry walked into the Forbidden Forest to sacrifice himself for the greater good.

I love everything about Deathly Hallows. It’s everything I had ever hoped for and I can’t ask for a better ending to the series. The only thing I’d want different is for it to have lasted longer. But, what proper Harry Potter fan wouldn’t want that?

What about you? What is your favorite book in your favorite series?

30 Days of Book Discussion: Day 3

Day 3: My Favorite Series

This is such a tough one to answer because I don’t want to leave any of my favorites out. But, But! If I had to choose just one, it’d have to be Harry Potter, hands down.

While Twilight got me to read and introduced me to my wonderful friends, Harry Potter is Harry Potter. I think that should be enough of a justification to explain my reasons. But, if it’s not, because I can’t say it any better, I’m going to quote Ginger from GReads who just started reading Harry Potter for her first time:

These books may come across as a tale about wizards and magic, but they’re so much more than that.  There’s truth, honor, wisdom, passion, friendship, and guidance spilled through out these pages. [...] It doesn’t matter what age you are, what part of the world you come from, or what you believe in.. [sic] the magic of literature, especially in this story, can touch us all.

What about you? What is your favorite series?

Day 1: The Best Book I Read Last Year

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins was my favorite book that I read from last year. When I finished Mockingjay last year, I had very mixed emotions. I was happy, sad, and a little bit disappointed. Yet, I was actually quite satisfied with how the series ended. There were a few things I wished would’ve happened differently, but only because I didn’t want them to happen. I die expect to cry more than I did, but I only cried at one point during the story because I think I was in shock for most of the story and couldn’t cry until I let it sink in.

I did miss the interaction between Katniss and Peeta, even though their separation was pertinent to the story. And, even though I felt like the ending was a bit rushed, I was okay with it. I know a lot of readers were disappointed that it didn’t end on a happier note. I wasn’t. I felt like it ended the way it should’ve. It was true to the time and place of the story. And, it was true to the characters, especially Katniss.

Now that it’s been over a year since I read Mockingjay, I’ve had time to think about the story, the outcomes, and the feelings I felt. It isn’t my favorite book of the series, but I still feel like it’s a good ending to a very epic story and I can’t wait to read the trilogy again.

What about you? What is the best book you read last year?

Day 2: A Book that I’ve Read more than 3 Times

There are quite a few books that I’ve read more than three times. But, I’d say my favorite is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling. Before I read Deathly Hallows, Prisoner of Azkaban was my favorite in the series. (It still is my favorite story; it’s just not my favorite book anymore.) I love all the elements that make up the story: Professor Lupin, Sirius Black, the Marauder’s Map and the Marauder’s themselves, the time turner, the dementors and patronus, Hogsmeade, the Knight Bus, Professor Snape, Ron and Hermione’s relationship, the Shrieking Shack, Scabbers, Buckbeak, the Firebolt, and even Malfoy.

When I first saw the movie, I was excited to have my favorite story of the series brought to life. Unfortunately, I was so disappointed. I feel like the movie doesn’t do this book justice. They cut out so many of the pivotal moments and focused on the wrong ones. But, while I am disappointed, I still love it because it does capture a few things that foreshadow future events–Ron and Hermione’s relationship being the main one.

What about you? What book have you read more than three times?

Fun with Pottermore

This post is going to be long. I’m not spoiling this experience for anyone by revealing new exclusive content (other than about my house). I’m sharing the questions I was asked during the wand selection and the sorting ceremony, so you can skip that part if you want.

I received an “owl” from Pottermore on Thursday, letting me know my account was ready to explore! I was so excited that anyone around me could just feel excitement radiating off me.

After exploring it for three days, I can tell you that I absolutely love it! There’s so much new exclusive content and a lot of fun activities to help enhance the Harry Potter experience. My favorite new exclusive content so far has been the back story about Professor McGonagall and the Mirror of Erised.

The two most exciting parts of the experience so far have been the wand selection and the sorting ceremony. Both are based on personality. The questions for the wand selection are the same for everyone. However, the sorting ceremony is a little different. Each “student” is asked seven questions, but they come from a pool of questions, so not everyone is asked the exact same questions.

How do I feel about being sorted into Slytherin? After I read Deathly Hallows four years ago, I took a sorting quiz based on the Meyer-Briggs personality test. That quiz put me in Slytherin. Ever since then, I’ve figured I’m a Slytherin, so I’m happy that it’s finally official. Plus, the welcome message from JK Rowling, given by Prefect Gemma Farley, quells the myths/rumors regarding the Slytherin house:

Firstly, let’s dispel a few myths. You might have heard rumours about Slytherin house–that we’re all into the Dark Arts, and will only talk to you if your great-grandfather was a famous wizard, and rubbish like that. Well, you don’t want to believe everything you hear from competing houses. I’m not denying that we’ve produced our share of Dark wizards, but so have the other three houses–they just don’t like admitting it. And yes, we have traditionally tended to take students who come from long lines of witches and wizards, but nowadays you’ll find plenty of people in Slytherin house who have at least one Muggle parent.

Here’s a little-known fact that the other three houses don’t bring up much: Merlin was a Slytherin. Yes, Merlin himself, the most famous wizard in history! He learned all he knew in this very house! Do you want to follow in the footsteps of Merlin? Or would you rather sit at the old desk of that illustrious ex-Hufflepuff, Eglantine Puffett, inventor of the Self-Soaping Dishcloth?

There’s a lot more to the welcome message than what I’ve shared. I just wanted to give you a glimpse of how cool being a Slytherin is. I mean how cool is it that I’m with the likes of Merlin? The Merlin!

I’m really excited for everyone to get a chance to explore it in October, read the new exclusive content, explore the worlds, and of course get a wand and be sorted. I hope it’ll be a good experience for all Potter fans, especially the new generation, and that everyone will enjoy it just as much as I have.

Pottermore: One Step Closer

I knew tonight would be the only night I’d have a chance to stay up and wait for the clue. What clue, you ask? One of seven clues that gives a million lucky Harry Potter fans the chance to win early access to Pottermore.

I heard rumors that the clue would be revealed some time after 8:00 am British time. That’s 1:00 am my time. 1:00 am came and went and no clue. I started to wonder if the clue would be revealed around 11:00 am British time to coincide with the departure of the Hogwarts Express. And, I wondered if waiting up until 4:00 am was a good idea.

Just as I was about to call it quits, “some time after 8:00 am British time” happened and translated to 8:57 am or 1:57 am my time. I was so excited! I knew the clue had to do with Diagon Alley thanks to my friend Luisa and we figured it would have to be a number so the answer would be universal. Before the clue was revealed, Luisa and I had come up with everything we could think of regarding numbers and Diagon Alley. Even though the actual clue isn’t one of the things we thought about, we both still got the answer. The clue was, “How many breeds of owl are featured on the Eeylops Owl Emporium sign? Multiply this number by 49.” The answer … 5. The final answer … 245.

I am registered! Now, we’ll see if this late night pays off and I’m one of the million that gets early access. Either way, I’m registered and I’m pretty happy about it. And, more importantly, no more late nights hunting for answers to clues.

PS–Happy birthday, Harry Potter and JK Rowling!
