Getting My Purple On

As some of you may remember, last year I had purple highlights during the summer. But when I started school again, I had to color over them because BYU, the school I attended, doesn’t allow extreme colors or hairstyles.

I’m no longer in school. Classes ended last week and my final is done. What did I do the first chance I had? I dyed my hair purple again! But, I didn’t just get highlights this time around; I did the whole thing!

Before I could get my hair to take the purple dye properly, my niece Carlee had to bleach my hair first. It was a nice shade of orangeish blond. My head is a little sensitive right now, but I’m in love! What do you think?

Getting Ready for School

The first day of school is Monday. When I had three weeks until school started, I came up with a list of five things I needed to get done. I only accomplished one of them, albeit the most important. Oopsies.

  1. Finish watching LOST.
  2. Conquer Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
  3. Finish reading The Book Thief.
  4. Reread Shiver and Linger, so I can read Forever.
  5. Gather my sanity to get me through the next few months.

Now that I’m out of time, I don’t really care about the first four items. I’ll still do them, just during the semester instead of before. I’ll watch LOST over the weekends. After all, I only have 16 episodes left. And, I can conquer Zelda one week or another. After I get out of my reading slump, I’ll accomplish 3 and 4.

I had one thing that wasn’t on my to do list that I still had to accomplish. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to go back to school at all. BYU, the school I attend, doesn’t allow extreme hairstyles, which is anyone’s guess, but I was fairly certain my current color wouldn’t be allowed. Today, I remedied that and had my niece Carlee redye my hair.

Although I miss the purple … a lot, I really like the new color. I also love that it’s still a bit edgy, but within BYU’s rules. (The red isn’t quite as noticeable when it’s not in the sun.)

At this point, after I put all my supplies together tomorrow, I’m ready to go back and I’m quite excited about it!

New Do

I decided that growing my hair out in the summer without air conditioning in my car is for the birds.  Not only am I extremely hot because my hair’s on my neck, yet not quite long enough to pull up all that successfully, I’m also dealing with it becoming snarly each and every time I go anywhere because of the unrolled windows.  Snarls and a soft head don’t go together.

Also, you can call it laziness, but I’m not one to spend a lot of time on my hair.  I like to sleep as long as I can before I have to get up and go to work, and I could do so much other stuff during that 45 minutes of hair-doing time.  (Yes, it takes me 45 minutes to straighten my hair.  It takes a very long time to dry and I have to flat iron my hair in a bunch of layers because my hair is extremely thick. Waah, right?)

Anyway, I decided to cut my hair.  I was considering, for a time, to chop it all off again, but I decided that I do like the versatility of being able to do different styles.  After a lot of consideration and help from my niece Carlee, who actually did my hair, I decided on a very short a-line cut in the back and longer sides to frame my face.

The best part about my do is that I only have to style the sides and top.  No back! And, I can even do it messy still.

PS–I hate posing for self-portraits.  They’re so annoying and I think I look hideous.

Fun with My Nieces

Last Friday, Corey and I went up to my niece Aymee’s place so her sister, my other niece Carlee, could do our hair early Saturday morning.  This happened to coincide with the release of the New Moon DVD.  I wasn’t planning on going to a release party because the movies don’t interest me that much.  However, Aymee’s friend asked if Aymee wanted to go so Aymee asked me if I wanted to go with them.  I told her I was fine either way; I just wanted to spend time with her.  At the last minute, Aymee’s friend decided not to go because she was too tired to stay up that late.  (She’s pregnant.)  Because Aymee and I were still up and already planning to go, we still went.

We found out that the Walmart we were going to was the same Walmart three of the actors–Michael Welch (Mike Newton), Justin Chon (Eric Yorkie), and Christian Serratos (Angela Webber)–were coming to for the release.  When we got to Walmart about 30 minutes before midnight, the parking lot was completely full! We should’ve known better with the craziness of the fans.  The autograph line was so long we would’ve been there until at least 4:00 am so we decided just to get in line for the DVD.

When the actors came out, I decided to see if I could get close enough to get a few pictures of them.  Thanks to the awesome zoom on my new camera, I was able to get a pretty good shot of each of them.

The next morning, Carlee came over to do our hair.  When the doorbell rang, I heard Aubree, one of Aymee and Dave’s daughters, yell, “Aunt Cha!” and then run down the stairs to get the door.  It was really funny and cute.  (Aubree’s almost three.  If you ask her when her birthday is, she says in one breath, “I’ll-be-three-May-8th-I’m-going-to-the-beach-for-my-birthday-to-swim-in-the-water.”  It’s so funny because she gets so excited about it!)

The last time Carlee did my hair, she cut it in a way that I could scrunch it enough to give the illusion that I have naturally curly hair.  Unfortunately, that ability didn’t last very long because my hair is very stubborn, straighter than straight, and became heavier and less willing to scrunch as it grew.  (See picture of Aymee and me above for verification.)

I asked Carlee if there was a perm that would let me have nice curls without looking like a poodle.  She told me a new perm had just come out.  It’s called the beach wave and it uses foam blocks instead of standard perming rods.  The result is a natural, very loose curl.  Aymee and I volunteered to be Carlee’s guinea pigs so she could try it out.  You may think I was brave to be a guinea pig, but I knew it wouldn’t turn out badly.  In fact, the worst case scenario was that it wouldn’t work at all.  Luckily, it did work and turned out great!  I think it’s the best perm I’ve ever had because I don’t look like I have perm at all.

Simplifying

I think I’ve only gone more than a week between posts once, maybe twice, in the entire two and a half years I’ve been blogging.  That tells you how busy life is right now!

My typical day starts with me getting up at 5:00 am if I decide to make myself presentable by doing my hair.  Otherwise, I get up around 5:30 am.  I’m at work by 6:30 am and I stay there until no later than 3:15 pm.  My first class–Japanese, which is an everyday class–starts at 4:00 pm.  On Mondays and Fridays, Japanese is my only class.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I also have an English class that goes until 6:30 pm.  And, on Wednesdays, I have my Doctrine and Covenants class until 7:00 pm.  I usually don’t get home until around 7:30 or 8:00 pm.  Then, I do homework until around 10:00 or 10:30 pm and go to bed after that.

I’m thoroughly enjoying myself.  I love class and I love having something to look forward to each day.  Even though I’m not getting much sleep, I’m thriving.

With this being said, however, I wanted a way to simplify my mornings. I want to look presentable but not take the extra 30 minutes to fix my hair.  I almost chopped my hair off last Friday, even though I’ve been growing it out for about a year.  My niece Carlee gave me an alternative style, however, and I love it!

My hair is straight, thick, and coarse.  The only curl I have is just a few waves, if you can even call it that, when my hair air dries.  It’s not enough to look good curly and too much to let my hair air dry and still look nice straight.  But, Carlee cut my hair into choppy layers and then showed me how to scrunch my hair so it has the illusion of being curly.  It takes me literally 5-10 minutes to do!
