A Birthday to Remember

As of Tuesday, I’m 33, which I can’t believe. I’m starting to feel old, which I’m not sure I like. This is the second year that I’ve wished I was still in my twenties and I think my wish has become a little bit stronger than last year’s. But, even though my birthday means that I age each year, I still love it and I’ll never tire of celebrating it.

Corey and I’ve been sick with bronchitis for the last month. (Corey’s even developed into pneumonia.) I’ve been taking a lot of time off work because I’ve been so sick. Because of that, I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to take my birthday off. Thankfully, I accrue enough paid time off from having worked at my job for nearly ten years that I had just enough.

Even though Corey has been more sick than I’ve been, he made me blueberry pancakes for breakfast. They were very good! Then, we bummed around the house for a few hours to rest up and gather our strength for the rest of the day.

I didn’t want to do anything that would tire Corey too much. I even told him I was fine staying home. But, he wanted me to feel special so I decided that a movie would be something fun and “relaxing” to do. We saw The Conspirator. It was fantastic and very moving, and I highly recommend it. The actors did superbly and the story was very interesting. It did a good job portraying the freedoms and rights we lose during time of war, and it’s very sad that almost 150 years later, we’re still in the same predicament as we were then.

After the movie, we got dinner at Five Guys. Five Guys is so good! There’s no comparison to them and any other hamburger joint. Their burgers and fries are the best. If you haven’t been there, you really need to try them! They beat In-N-Out hands-down, no contest!

Because we were both sick and neither of us had time to bake a cake, I wanted to go to The Chocolate for dessert. I had heard so many good things about them, but I’d never been there. My co-worker Ben told me to order the cazookie, a cookie straight from the oven with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. I did order that and it was delicious. I also got one of their sugar cookies and it was fantastic!

On the way home, Corey drove by the llamas. I enjoyed seeing them, especially the two babies. :D Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get any good pictures of the babies. I’ll keep trying because they’re so cute. ;) One is poofy and really fluffy; he’s probably a baby alpaca rather than a llama. The other one just looks like a miniature llama, but it makes him tons cuter! I’ve lovingly named them Llawrence and Llars.

On my birthday, I received a couple of cards, one from my parents and one from Corey’s parents. My parents gave me some money and Corey’s parents gave me an iTunes gift card. I used part of the gift card to buy the soundtrack of How to Train Your Dragon, the best movie ever.

I got my presents from Corey this weekend–they have a purple theme to them. Yesterday, I got new glasses. My old ones snapped in a place that made them irreparable about a month ago. I’ve been dealing with contacts ever since and after I got contacts a couple of years ago, I’ve discovered that contacts and I don’t work well together. Today, I got my other gift–purple highlights in my hair! :D Didn’t my niece Carlee do an awesome job? I love it! They’ll last for the summer while I’m not in school. Then, it’s back to boring normal hair colors. ;)

Even though Corey was very sick, he still did a great job of making my birthday special. I’m lucky to have him as my husband! :D

Thank you to everyone who made me feel special on my birthday! I appreciate your thoughtfulness!

A Yearly Tradition

On Monday evening, I went to dinner with my birthday twins–Debbie, Sue, Christie, and Kayla.  Okay, we’re not really birthday twins because all our birthdays are on different days, but we all have April birthdays.  This yearly celebration has become something of a tradition for us, and it’s one that I look forward to all year long.

We went to Iggy’s Sports Grill last year and we went to The Mayan the year before that.  This year, we went to the Cheesecake Factory.  Yes, I ordered the 1600-calorie slice of carrot cake for dessert.  But! I didn’t eat the entire thing all at once. To be honest, if I hadn’t been so full from my meal, I would’ve eaten the entire thing right then and there.  It’s so delicious!  (It’s out of my system now for another six months so I can go back to eating healthy again. ;) )

It was a little harder this year to find a time when all of us could get together.  We actually had to reschedule three different times because of things that kept coming up.  But, it was worth the wait and all the schedule juggling that took place because I always have such a great time with these ladies, and I love spending time with them.

Another Year Has Come and Gone

I can’t believe another year has come and gone already.  Nor, can I believe that I’m 32!  This is the first year that I actually feel old and have wished to be back in my mid- to late-twenties.  I think going to school with so many young people has put how old I am into perspective.  But, even with being 32, I still love my birthday and I had a great day yesterday.

Yesterday was the first day I’ve had to work on my birthday in five years.  I usually take my birthday off, but this year I didn’t have any time off because I was sick for a few days a few weeks ago.  Work wasn’t too bad, though, and I was even productive. ;)

Many of my good friends and family members sent me birthday wishes via Facebook.  I received a couple of phone calls too.  I also received a couple of cards, including this one from my friend Kayla.  She sent it to me at work yesterday, and it made my day!  Aren’t they cute?  I love the white one’s facial expression, and I was so excited to see “Llove.” :D

After work, I spent my birthday with Corey and our friends the Vigues.  When we arrived at the Vigues’, each of the kids had made me a birthday card.  Jack made sure his card was my favorite color and he drew a picture of me playing the “penguin” game with him on my computer.  (The penguin game is a game at yetisports.org and is one of Jack’s and my favorite games to play together.)  Sheridan made my card with her favorite colors–pink, orange, and purple.  And, Henry helped draw pretty scribbles on his card.  He even said, “Me, me, me!” which translates to “Happy birthday, Aunt Jenni!” :D

Ali is a great cook and she made my favorite yesterday–homemade tacos.  They’re so good and better than any restaurant out there!  I absolutely love them.  Corey baked and decorated my birthday cake.  It was carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, decorated with cute purple cookie frosting. :D We also had vanilla bean ice cream.  Yum!

After dinner, we had Family Home Evening together, and Jack taught the lesson.  It was all about putting the important things first in your life.  We even played a game to help us remember those things we could live without so we can keep our priorities straight.  Jack did a really good job, and it’s crazy that he’s growing up so fast.

While I was there, Henry was being so cute so I had to take some pictures of him.  He has the cutest dimples and makes the cutest faces, including a very fierce crusty (not pictured). One of his pictures even made the cut in being included with Project 365.

After the kids went to bed, Tyler, Ali, Corey, and I played R2-D2 Trouble.  (It’s the Star Wars version of Trouble.  Tyler got it as a birthday present from Jack.)  It was a lot of fun, even though I came in dead last. ;)

I really had a great day.  It was fun to share it with some of the people I love.  I don’t think my birthday could have been any better!  Thank you to all for making it such a great day! :D

Carlee’s Birthday

Yesterday, I was going to go to another signing for Shannon Hale, but I was so worn out that I didn’t end up going.  I was a little disappointed, but I know I’ll have another opportunity.

Missing the signing turned out to be a good thing.  My sister Becky and her family wanted to come down to try our frozen yogurt.  And, since it was my niece Carlee’s birthday, they decided to go to the Olive Garden and invited Corey and me to come along.  Unfortunately, Corey had to work at Froyo yesterday so only I could go.  The dinner was really good and I enjoyed spending some time with everyone.

After dinner, we went to Froyo.  Everyone really enjoyed the frozen yogurt, especially my great-niece Aubree.  My niece Kelsey was trying to get Aubree’s attention, but she was too engrossed in her frozen yogurt.  After a minute, she exclaimed, “This is so good.” And, when we had our picture taken, Aubree was really upset because we took her away from her “ice cream.”

While I was taking pictures, I was able to get my great-niece Sophie to smile.  She’s so cute! :D

My Favorite Day of the Year

Whenever my birthday has been on a Sunday, it has always coincided with Easter.  I liked having it on Easter because it helped make my birthday feel fun or more special since I can’t really go out and do anything on the actual day.  This year, however, Easter happened to fall on the Sunday before my birthday. Since today’s my actual birthday, Corey and I celebrated yesterday.

Monsters vs. AliensCorey took me to a movie of my choosing.  I decided I wanted to see Monsters vs. Aliens.  I was a little disappointed for two reasons.  The first and biggest reason is that the sound died and we missed the first 10 or so minutes.  The second is that the story was good, but not great.  I still enjoyed the movie, though.  I really liked that Hugh Laurie played the mad scientist cockroach because it totally fit him.  And, of course, there’s nothing better than Stephen Colbert as the President.

After the movie, Corey took me to one of my favorite restaurants.  I prepared all day by only eating a very low number of calories so I could get whatever I wanted and still stay within my calorie limit for the day.  We went to the Bombay House, which is an Indian restaurant.

Later on, we went over to our friends’ house.  James and Meagan hadn’t seen the last Futurama movie or Twilight so we were going to watch those together, but our network was running really slowly and we couldn’t get the movies from our Drobo to our AppleTV quickly enough.  Instead, we played Monopoly.  I love Monopoly, but no one will ever play with me because it’s probably one of the most detested games of all time. But, since it was my birthday, Corey, James, and Meagan all humored me.  I lost, but I still had fun.  James ended up bankrupting us all.  I think I need a rematch.

Today, I’m just taking it easy by spending time with Corey and relaxing. I went to Sacrament meeting and then came home.  (I think my normal eating habits disagreed with all the eating out in the past couple of days).  I also went to choir practice for the first time this morning and I didn’t suck as badly as I thought I would.  But, I still need a lot of practice.

Corey gave me The Hunger Games and Graceling. :D I didn’t get my slanket  , but it’s okay since it’s getting warmer.  I’ll keep bugging Corey so I can get it for Christmas or something.

Yay!

Yesterday, I received a couple of cards in the mail.  My parents-in-law gave me a gift certificate to Borders and my parents gave me some money.  I’ll be going to Borders tomorrow to pick up a couple more books!  Or, maybe even the Twilight soundtrack. :D

Thanks for all the birthday wishes via my blog, Facebook, e-mail, phone, text, cards, in person, etc.  I really appreciate it!
