I would skip Lolita and Atonement for sure... no redeeming value. I would suggest The Dollmaker by Harriette Arnow as an American classic and Oh Pioneers and My Antonia by Willa Cather, also American classics, and Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse as another American up and coming classic.
