A Bit of Me(me): Cookies

This week’s question: What is your favorite cookie?

Spicy oatmeal drops.  This oatmeal cookie recipe is a favorite of my family and better than all other oatmeal cookie recipes.  When I was young, my mother always baked these cookies without any specific reason other than that we liked them a lot.  My mom baked them with chopped nuts and raisins.  I bake them without nuts because I don’t like them.  Corey will only eat them if they have chocolate chips and no nuts or raisins.

Here’s the recipe:

Spicy Oatmeal Drops
  • 1 ½ cups flour
  • ½ tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. baking soda
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. nutmeg
  • ½ tsp. cloves
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1 cup chocolate chips (optional)
  1. In a bowl, mix the dry ingredients together, except the oats.  Put aside.
  2. In large bowl, whisk together the shortening and brown sugar.  Add egg and vanilla.  Mix well.
  3. Add the milk and vanilla alternately to the dry ingredients.  Mix well.
  4. Add oats.
  5. If desired, add chopped nuts, raisins or chocolate chips. (If adding raisins, I don’t recommend that you add chocolate chips.)
  6. Grease a cookie sheet.
  7. Place a teaspoon of dough onto a greased cookie sheet.  Repeat until you have about a dozen cookies on the tray.
  8. Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.  Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes or until they’re golden.  Cool before eating.

Cool before eating????? Seriously now! Who can resists cookies that long?

  2. Isn’t it funny how we all like different things in our cookies, but for the most part almost everyone loves them? Maybe that’s why, they are so versatile. Love the sounds of this recipe, and way to go for adding it! I need to post mine since I’ve had a few requests now. :)

    Great choice!

Favorite cookies of all time. Use to make these all the time in high school for the basketball team… :)

John loves these cookies too. Mom makes the best stuff.

I think they’re awesome too. I used to make them all the time, but not anymore since I’m trying to stay away from sugar. I need to figure out a way to make them a little healthier. Maybe, if I use Splenda and whole wheat. But, I’m not sure how that will taste.
