Friday’s Fab Five

Here are this week’s questions:

  1. What book are you looking forward to reading this summer?
  2. Do you take a book with you when you go to the beach or pool?
  3. Do you find you have more time or less time to read during the summer?
  4. Do you have an e-reader and do you take that with you wherever you go?
  5. When you go on vacation in the summer, how many books do you bring with you? Or, do you prefer to pick one up when you are there or not to read at all on vacation?

Here are my answers:

  1. I’m looking forward to reading Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins more than any other book this year, let alone this summer.
  2. No.  I like to swim when I’m at the beach or pool.  I’m not a tanner or sitter outer.
  3. This summer, I’ll have more time to read because I’m not going to school at the same time.  When I’m not in school, I usually have the same amount of time to read during the summer as I usually do during the rest of the year.
  4. No, but I want a Kindle, and yes, I’d take it wherever I go.
  5. I take a few books with me just in case I finish the one I’m currently reading.  However, I haven’t been on “vacation” in almost two years.

A Full Plate

I decided to drop my summer term class after all.  It had nothing to do with the teacher and it had nothing to do with being assigned to read books before the class even started.  (Actually, I’m going to keep reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy since they’re already on my radar.)  I simply decided that I need a break from something.  I’d prefer to take a break from work (not my new job, just work in general), but since I can’t, school is the next best thing.

I have too much going on all at once to have to worry about an accelerated class too.  Changing jobs has taken a toll on me.  I really like my new position, but it has taken some getting used to, especially as far as the schedule is concerned.  I can dictate my own schedule, but I have existing appointments I have to work around so I’ve had to work 11-hour days a couple of times since I started.

Trying to figure out my health is taking a toll on me too.  I’ve noticed that I’ve been feeling a lot worse lately, which is in line with IBS.  (The more stress you’re under the worse IBS becomes.)  The more and more I’ve started to pay attention to the things I eat, I seem to feel icky after I eat anything with gluten or anything with dairy.  I haven’t been able to pin it down to one or the other yet.  (Corey thinks it could also be sugar.)  I’m slowly going gluten free, but I don’t want to go completely gluten free until I’ve talked to my gastroenterologist tomorrow.

My regular doctor told me I should know after two weeks of being completely gluten free if I feel better, maybe not completely better, but remarkably better.  I’ve decided to go gluten free for two weeks (starting this Sunday) and still eat dairy.  If I don’t feel much better, I’ll also cut out the dairy for a couple of weeks.  Then, I’ll introduce gluten back into my diet to see if one or the other (or both) are the culprits to feeling bad after I eat.  If neither going off of gluten nor dairy helps, then I’ll cut out the other allergen foods and work from there.

It’ll be nice to not worry about school while I’m figuring out my new job and figuring out my new eating lifestyle.  Plus!  I get to read what I want for 10 weeks. I’m hoping to up my number of books read drastically during this little hiatus.

ESFJ: Extroverted Sensing Feeling Judging

On Friday night, Corey and I went to our friends’, the Vigues, place to watch their kids so Ali could go out with Tyler for her birthday.  After they came home and the kids were put to bed, somehow we got on the subject of personalities.  Tyler has a book, Please Understand Me II, that uses the Myer-Briggs personality test to determine your personality type.  He tested Corey and me to see what we were.

Corey’s an ENTP–Extroverted Intuitive Thinking Perceiving.  When we read the description, it was him to a T.  There wasn’t a single thing written about that personality type that contradicted with Corey.  There was a lot of insightful laughing to be had.

At first, I was a cross between an INFJ (Introverted Intuitive Feeling Judging) and an ISFJ (Introverted Intuitive Feeling Judging).  They’re known as the Protector and Counselor respectively.  A lot of the things said about those types were accurate, but there were a lot of things that weren’t.  We figured that a good mix of both described me pretty well.  But, it got me thinking.  I tend to answer these questions with how I want to be or how I perceive myself to be, which isn’t how I actually am in most cases.  I decided to take the test again since Tyler let me borrow his book.

The second time around, I came out as an ESFJ–Extroverted Sensing Feeling Judging–also known as the Provider.  I was leery about this assessment because I don’t see myself as extroverted.  However, after reading about this personality, I realized that I really am extroverted, but I’m extremely self-conscious, as most ESFJs are, which makes me seem introverted.

Here are some things about my personality type, and if you know me well enough, you’ll see why this is a better fit than the other two.

  • Personable and talkative, bouncing from subject to subject
  • Restless if isolated from people (enjoy socializing and entertaining)
  • Fascination in gossip with local people or celebrities
  • Restive when talking about philosophic or scientific abstractions
  • Listen to acknowledged authorities on abstract matters and rely on officially sanctioned views to form their opinions and attitudes
  • Nostalgic and recount past experiences often
  • Pessimistic, expressing doom and gloom that’s sometimes contagious
  • Highly sensitive (easily wounded), but not reluctant to express emotional reactions
  • Quick to like and dislike, putting those they admire on pedestals and come down hard on the people and issues they don’t like
  • Have difficulty recognizing the shortcomings of loved ones
  • Conscious of appearances and others’ opinions of themselves
  • Crushed by personal criticism
  • Fond-hearted, sentimental, and observe birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays fervently
  • Take things in via their five senses in a literal, concrete fashion
  • Need approval from others to feel good about themselves
  • Weigh their values and morals against the world around them, rather than against an internal value system
  • Natural tendency to want to control their environment
  • Warmly interested in others
  • Prefer to do things in the established way, rather than venturing into uncharted territory
  • Controlling, overly sensitive, and imagine bad intentions when there are none
  • Warm, sympathetic, helpful, cooperative, tactful, down-to-earth, practical, thorough, consistent, organized, enthusiastic, and energetic

Fans of The Twilight Saga will be enthralled by this riveting story of Bree Tanner, a character first introduced in Eclipse, and the darker side of the newborn vampire world she inhabits.

In another irresistible combination of danger, mystery, and romance, Stephenie Meyer tells the devastating story of Bree and the newborn army as they prepare to close in on Bella Swan and the Cullens, following their encounter to its unforgettable conclusion.

Bree Tanner can barely remember life before she had uncannily powerful senses, superhuman reflexes and unstoppable physical strength. Life before she had a relentless thirst for blood … life before she became a vampire.

All Bree knows is that living with her fellow newborns has few certainties and even fewer rules: watch your back, don’t draw attention to yourself and, above all, make it home by sunrise or die. What she doesn’t know: her time as an immortal is quickly running out.

Then Bree finds an unexpected friend in Diego, a newborn just as curious as Bree about their mysterious creator, whom they know only as “her.” As they come to realize that the newborns are pawns in a game larger than anything they could have imagined, Bree and Diego must choose sides and decide whom to trust. But when everything you know about vampires is based on a lie, how do you find the truth?

The story of Bree Tanner ties in with Eclipse, the third book in the Twilight Saga.  Bree is the newborn vampire killed by the Volturi after the war between the Cullens, werewolves, and the newborn army created by Victoria.  This novella follows about six days of Bree’s life as a newborn vampire.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this little off-chute of the main story of the Twilight Saga.  I enjoyed the change in perspective, especially the perspective into the fight in the clearing, something the reader missed in Eclipse.  I also liked being in the mind of a “regular” vampire and seeing that side of things.  Even though she wasn’t completely evil like Victoria or the Volturi, you still experienced the blood lust that newborn vampires normally feel when first changed.  You also experienced the killing and tasting of human blood, which was very interesting.

For being a novella, I thought Bree was very well developed.  I wished, as I got closer to the end, that the ending of Eclipse had been written differently.  I wanted to see her have a chance at living as a vampire with knowing the rules and possibly becoming a part of the Cullen family.  I also enjoyed meeting Diego and Fred, two of Bree’s friends.  It was also interesting to see Riley’s character in a little more depth since the reader only encountered him for a short time in Eclipse.

I loved how much information was packed into this short little novella.  It gave me a lot of insight into the other vampires’ minds.  It even answered a question I had about something Edward had said about the Volturi at the end of Eclipse.

Project 365: Week 11

Yesterday was a very busy day.  My niece Cami, who’s getting married this coming Friday, had her bridal shower yesterday.  And, Corey went to a Cake concert with our nephew-in-law Dave while I spent the evening with his wife and daughters.  Needless to say, I didn’t get a chance to post my Project 365 pictures so here you go.  There’s an extra picture this time around, which means there’ll be one less next week.

June 12: My great-niece Aubree loves squishy animals, particularly lizards, frogs, spiders, and all those kinds of creepy crawly things. While we were at her birthday party, I decided to put this frog in my niece Carlee’s hood just for fun. June 13: This is where I do my homework most of the time. Once upon a time, Corey bought me flowers and this vase.  We hadn’t really used it since so he bought me these immortal flowers to go in the vase. I thought it was sweet of him to get them for me.
June 14: These roses are in front of one of my neighbor’s homes. I think they’re beautiful. I love the colors, and I love their shape and fullness.  They also have a wonderful, sweet smell. June 15: The wind has been super strong the last few days. These petals are from the same roses from the previous day’s picture. I thought they were kind of neat looking on the sidewalk like this.
June 16: This is Lliam, the llama. I drive by him when I go to work. Recently, he and the other llama (Llarry) in this pasture were shaved. I think they look super skinny now for some reason. I also think they look like a cross between a giraffe and a horse so I had to get a picture of one of them. June 17: My kitties love to go outside, but Corey and I only let them out when we’re with them. (We live by too many busy streets and I worry about them too much.) Whenever they do get to go outside, they like to eat the greenery, explore the bushes and flowers, and hide in the grass.
June 18: Corey and I went over to our friend’s, the Vigues, house for Ali’s birthday celebration. We ate a yummy chocolate cake with fresh strawberries, chocolate gnosh, and custard. This picture happened by accident. Ali was placing something on the table as I took this picture and her hand created a kind of sun ray effect. June 19: I was happy to see my snail prowling about early in the morning when Corey and I came home from Ali’s birthday celebration.  I was really excited that this picture counted as the next day’s picture since it was taken after midnight.  It’s my favorite picture so far–great composition and lighting and awesome content.
