My Favorite Day of the Year

Whenever my birthday has been on a Sunday, it has always coincided with Easter.  I liked having it on Easter because it helped make my birthday feel fun or more special since I can’t really go out and do anything on the actual day.  This year, however, Easter happened to fall on the Sunday before my birthday. Since today’s my actual birthday, Corey and I celebrated yesterday.

Corey took me to a movie of my choosing.  I decided I wanted to see Monsters vs. Aliens.  I was a little disappointed for two reasons.  The first and biggest reason is that the sound died and we missed the first 10 or so minutes.  The second is that the story was good, but not great.  I still enjoyed the movie, though.  I really liked that Hugh Laurie played the mad scientist cockroach because it totally fit him.  And, of course, there’s nothing better than Stephen Colbert as the President.

After the movie, Corey took me to one of my favorite restaurants.  I prepared all day by only eating a very low number of calories so I could get whatever I wanted and still stay within my calorie limit for the day.  We went to the Bombay House, which is an Indian restaurant.

Later on, we went over to our friends’ house.  James and Meagan hadn’t seen the last Futurama movie or Twilight so we were going to watch those together, but our network was running really slowly and we couldn’t get the movies from our Drobo to our AppleTV quickly enough.  Instead, we played Monopoly.  I love Monopoly, but no one will ever play with me because it’s probably one of the most detested games of all time. But, since it was my birthday, Corey, James, and Meagan all humored me.  I lost, but I still had fun.  James ended up bankrupting us all.  I think I need a rematch.

Today, I’m just taking it easy by spending time with Corey and relaxing. I went to Sacrament meeting and then came home.  (I think my normal eating habits disagreed with all the eating out in the past couple of days).  I also went to choir practice for the first time this morning and I didn’t suck as badly as I thought I would.  But, I still need a lot of practice.

Corey gave me The Hunger Games and Graceling. I didn’t get my slanket, but it’s okay since it’s getting warmer.  I’ll keep bugging Corey so I can get it for Christmas or something.

Yay!

Yesterday, I received a couple of cards in the mail.  My parents-in-law gave me a gift certificate to Borders and my parents gave me some money.  I’ll be going to Borders tomorrow to pick up a couple more books!  Or, maybe even the Twilight soundtrack.

Thanks for all the birthday wishes via my blog, Facebook, e-mail, phone, text, cards, in person, etc.  I really appreciate it!

A Birthday Celebration Among Friends

Last night, I went out with some of my friends.  Debbie, Sue, Christie, Kayla, Rachael, and I all have birthdays in April.  Last year, we went to The Mayan to celebrate together and we had so much fun.  We wanted to do something together again this year.  Unfortunately, Rachael moved to California in March so she couldn’t join us. However, Kayla’s sister Shauna, who’s visiting from Texas, joined us.

This year, we decided to go to Iggy’s Sports Grill.  It’s a very popular restaurant in Utah and the food’s very yummy. To be somewhat healthy, I had coconut shrimp and tilapia with steamed vegetables and rice pilaf.  Then, for dessert, I had an apple torte with vanilla ice cream, which wasn’t very healthy at all.  But, I figured, since it was my birthday, I was allowed a little treat. We’ll see what it does to my weight loss on Tuesday.

Even though the food was excellent, the company was better.  I love hanging out with these women.  They’re so fabulous and I’m very lucky to have them as friends.  We always have a good time together and end up overstaying our welcome wherever we go.

All in all, we had a great evening and I can’t wait to celebrate our birthdays together next year.  Happy birthday girls!

New Look

I decided to change my blog theme again. I loved my last one, but I like to change things up and I wanted something a little more springy. I’m hoping it’ll inspire the weather to stay more like spring than winter.

I’m not sure I like how this turned out.  It seems too pink and I’m having purple withdrawals.  I really love brown and pink together, but this isn’t quite what I had in mind.  I absolutely love my new header; maybe, I just need to ditch the pink and do another color, or a darker pink.

What do you think?  Should I leave it like it is?  Or, should I change the pink out for a different color?  If so, which would you recommend?  Or, should I try a darker pink?

Update: I got rid of the straight pink background because it was just too much!  I decided to add another color into the mix, kind of tangerine-ish.  I like this a lot better because the pink isn’t so overpowering.  Now, the theme just seems kind of sherbet-y.  But, do you think it’s too busy or bright?  Maybe, it’ll just take a little getting used to.

A New Business

As of about an hour ago, Corey and I are the proud owners of a frozen yogurt establishment called Froyo.  We’ve been in the process of buying Froyo for about a month and a half now and we’re glad it’s finally ours.

Froyo is located at 2255 N. University Parkway in Provo and is open Monday through Thursday from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm and Friday and Saturday from 12:00 pm to 11:oo pm.  The menu currently includes frozen yogurt (with add-ins), Dreyer’s® ice cream, and hot chocolate.  In the near future, we plan to move Froyo to a better location and add sorbet (dairy free) and blenders (similar to fruit smoothies) to our menu.

Corey has been working on a change in corporate identity for Froyo because it needs to be updated.  For example, here’s the old logo and the new logo.

And, one of the things we’ve been contemplating along with the identity change is a name change.  Corey and I have been trying to decide if changing the name would positively or negatively affect sales to our target market.  So, I’ve decided to create a poll and see what the results are from my blog followers.

Anyway, thanks for participating in the poll.  Corey and I are really excited about Froyo and we hope you come by some time to say hi and get a healthy, yummy treat!

PS–If you are for the name change and you have a name idea, please leave it in the comments.

Update: Poll closed.

Review: Dune by Frank Herbert

Title: Dune
Author: Frank Herbert
Series: Dune Chronicles #1
Genre: Science Fiction
Buy on Amazon · Add to Shelfari · Add to Goodreads

This Hugo and Nebula Award winner tells the sweeping tale of a desert planet called Arrakis, the focus of an intricate power struggle in a byzantine interstellar empire. Arrakis is the sole source of Melange, the “spice of spices.” Melange is necessary for interstellar travel and grants psychic powers and longevity, so whoever controls it wields great influence.

The troubles begin when stewardship of Arrakis is transferred by the Emperor from the Harkonnen Noble House to House Atreides. The Harkonnens don’t want to give up their privilege, though, and through sabotage and treachery they cast young Duke Paul Atreides out into the planet’s harsh environment to die. There he falls in with the Fremen, a tribe of desert dwellers who become the basis of the army with which he will reclaim what’s rightfully his. Paul Atreides, though, is far more than just a usurped duke. He might be the end product of a very long-term genetic experiment designed to breed a super human; he might be a messiah. His struggle is at the center of a nexus of powerful people and events, and the repercussions will be felt throughout the Imperium.

Dune is one of the most famous science fiction novels ever written, and deservedly so. The setting is elaborate and ornate, the plot labyrinthine, the adventures exciting. Five sequels follow.

This is actually the third time I’ve read Dune.  I first read it for my Science Fiction class in high school.  It was the first book I ever read that was assigned to one of my classes.  And, it immediately became one of my favorite books.  At the time, it was my only favorite book.

Each time I re-read Dune, I fall in love with it all over again because I love the complexity of the story.  While I was reading it this time, however, the relationship between the characters stood out more than they had the first two times I read Dune.  I think reading all the different stories with romance intertwined in them has affected how I view other stories.  For example, there’s a small love story between Paul and Chani.  But, it’s not the main focus of the story.  And, as I read about them, I found myself wanting that aspect of the story to be more prominent, even though I knew it wouldn’t be.

I think it’s interesting how each time I re-read a book, my view or outlook of the story changes depending on where I am in life, what type of difficulties I’m facing at the time, or because I now know the outcome of the story/series.  I found this to be especially true when I re-read New Moon.  Even though I think the story’s still heart-wrenching, I can get through it much more easily now because I know the outcome of the series.

Anyway, I loved Dune this time around just as much as I did the other times I’ve read it.  Actually, I think I enjoyed it a little more this time around and I’m glad I took the time to re-read it again rather than just focusing on reading books I’ve never read.  I also think it’s high time I read the other books in the series since I’ve never read them.
