Changes in the World

On the way to work today, I was listening to the radio.  I happened to be listening to NPR, which is out-of-the-norm for me.  (I normally listen to an alternative music station if I listen to the radio at all.)  As most people know, NPR usually has frequent news breaks.  During one of those news break, the announcer said that President Dmitry Medvedev announced that his country (Russia) is going to grant diplomatic recognition to the Georgian separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.  Unless something happens to stop this recognition, the world will have two more countries.

You’re probably wondering why I’m blogging about this since I hardly ever … er … never blog about world news.  This news got me thinking about how much the world has changed since I was younger.  I remember when:

  • Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia were all part of the Soviet Union (USSR).  I also remember that the athletes in the Olympics represented the USSR rather than their individual countries.
  • East and West Germany were separate countries, with Berlin divided by the Berlin Wall.
  • The Czech Republic and Slovakia made up the country of Czechoslovakia.
  • Slovenia, Croatia, the Republic of Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia all made up the country of Yugoslavia.

Those are the major changes that I remember happening while I was in school.  However, I know there’ve been a lot more changes than what I’ve listed. ;) What changes in the world do you remember?

A Quick Update

As you’ve noticed, I haven’t really posted a lot in the last week or so.  Life has been kind of boring. :? It feels like Corey and I have been holed up in our house, which became old really quickly.  I found out that I didn’t have mono.  I just had some weird virus that acted and looked a lot like mono.  I’m much better now, thank goodness!

*****

I’ve been reading a lot, which has been nice.  And, the Twilight Lexicon finally came back up, after being down for two weeks.  Stupid Internet terrorists! :x At least I could talk to some of my online friends.

*****

Corey and I have been hanging out with each other, watching movies, and talking.  That’s been nice, too.  Other than that, not much has been going on.  Hopefully, life will pick up a bit more … and soon! ;)

My Fairy Name

I’m really into dumb quizzes right now.  Anything that gives me something to do at work, really.  At least the quizzes give me something to post on my blog. ;)

Your fairy is called Tangle Elffilter.
She is a cheerful sprite.
She lives at the bottom of tangled gardens and in hedgerows.
She is only seen on midsummer’s eve.
She wears tangled dresses of multi-colored petals. She has delicate green wings like a cicada.

Summary from Back Cover

One fateful day, sixteen people gather for the reading of Samuel W. Westing’s will. To their surprise, the will turns out to be a contest, challenging the heirs to find out who among them is Westing’s murderer. Forging ahead, through blizzards, burglaries, and bombings, the game is on. Only two people hold all the clues. One of them is a Westing heir. The other is you!

My Thoughts

My class read The Westing Game together as a “class” book.  I don’t remember reading it completely because a lot of the story seemed unfamiliar, and at that time, I hated to read.  The only thing I remembered about the book was that the clues had something to do with the song “America, the Beautiful.”  In fact, I didn’t even remember the name until I read it in a comment on my Another Mystery Book post back in February.

Ever since I rediscovered this book back in February, I wanted to read it again.  The story’s hard to follow at times because of the constant change in voice, meaning the story’s narrated by each character multiple times within a chapter.  Other than that, if you’re looking for a fun, fast read, I recommend you give The Westing Game a try.  Even at only 196 pages in length, the story’ll keep you guessing until the very end.

Movie News

For those of you who haven’t heard, the movie for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is no longer being released on November 21, 2008. 8O It has been pushed back to next summer.  The new release date is July 17, 2009.

I’m a huge Harry Potter fan, but I like the books more than the movies, so I’m okay with waiting another seven months for the movie.  My only concern is that with the plan to cut the Deathly Hallows movie into two movies, I just hope we don’t have to wait until 2015, or later, to finally find out what happens to Harry and his friends in movie form.  I mean the actors can only pull off being teenagers for so long and it’d be catastrophic if they cast different actors to finish the series!

Because the Half-Blood Prince movie’s release date is moving to July 2009, the Twilight movie’s release date is moving up and taking Half-Blood Prince’s spot! The Twilight movie is now being released on November 21, 2008; three weeks earlier than planned! Woo hoo!
